Action Week 26: Rep. Story Lead Us to a Clean Future

It’s week 26 of our 40-week count down to the UN Climate Summit in Paris.

Today’s Monday Action:
Urge Your State Representative to Be Bold in Combating Climate Change.

Our numbers are growing! – Mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, sisters, sons and daughters are all demanding a safe future NOW. We are pulling the emergency brake on carbon pollution and the tide is turning toward renewable energy.

The Monday Action Recipe:

Monday Actions start out with a general header: “I am urgently concerned about climate change.” This is the core message we want to bring home. It’s straightforward and big-picture, something that all US voters anywhere can vocalize to their elected representatives. You can therefore share Monday Actions broadly! This chorus is growing, and quickly.

In addition to this repeated declaration you’ll see we craft something specific and local for “spice”.

Find your personal State Legislators here.  (If your representative is Ellen Story, check out the letter to her sampled below.)

Tell your State Representative, (sample call or cut-and-paste email)

Dear Representative ___________________:
I am urgently concerned about climate change.  [you can “spice up” this message yourself by adding how it touches you personally, or by mentioning specific issues that are important to you.] This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore I urge you to be bold in fighting for real solutions to stop climate change. We look to you for your leadership.

With Mothers Out Front
Well done! See you next week.
And remember, friends don’t let friends Ignore climate change. Forward Monday Actions today!
(If you wish, check out the additional, in-person actions listed after the sample letter to Ellen Story below.)
If Ellen Story is your representative, you might like to share the following text, created by a small team of mothers in her Western Massachusetts district.

Subject: Be Bold On Climate!
Oppose the Pipelines, Raise Solar Caps, Promote Renewable Energy and Storage.

Dear Representative Story,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore I urge you to be bold in fighting for real solutions to stop climate change. We look to you for your leadership.

Thank you for working so boldly to oppose the proposed MA pipeline! I applaud you for doing so by recently joining anti-pipeline groups seeking legal status to intervene in the request by Berkshire Gas Co. to become a customer of the planned Tennessee Gas Pipeline project. Please stay on top of that!

Thank you also for supporting lifting caps on solar electricity. I was shocked but not surprised to learn that our unfortunately for-profit electric utilities (Eversource, NStar, National Grid etc.) want to stall lifting the cap on large solar power incentives. This certainly strangles the vibrant local solar industry and our ability to halt the increased use of “natural” gas.

I also look to you to seize and promote the new development in energy storage announced by Tesla recently: Now that storage has been solved, there should be no impediment to a green energy future. The question is not whether we will switch to clean energy sources, but how quickly.

Still here? Are you looking for an in-person action? Here are two:

1) Ask 5 people to join you in doing Monday Actions. Get them ready to start on Monday, June 15, when the next 8-week Monday Action cycle begins with another message to President Obama. If they have questions, you may find the FAQ useful. You will have made a Monday Action Circle!

To see how easy it is to lead a circle, you are cordially invited to an hour-long conference call where Monday Action Circle leaders can share ideas. To join that call, just dial 605-475-3220 from your phone and enter ID 555127# on June 7 at 7pm.

2) Mark your calendar for Thursday June 11, where you can personally tell the Department of Public Utilities to stop the proposed MA pipeline: You are invited to attend the DPU hearing 7-9pm at the Greenfield Middle School (195 Federal St., Greenfield, MA.)

Visit our Mothers Out Front webpage for details about other ways to join us in person and online!

  1. When I called Rep. Story’s office I asked the aide if Ellen would be at the solar hearing tomorrow in Boston and/or at the pipeline hearing June 11th in Greenfield, as well as what she knows about utilities adopting the Tesla and “trojan” storage battery systems. I was told I’ll get a call back with details. Seems we need to ask for specifics to keep deepening their research.
