President Obama, Use Your Authority to Keep It In The Ground

Today’s Monday Action: Urge Obama to ban oil and gas leasing in all federal waters.
————————————————–
Dear President Obama,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. Natural gas is mainly composed of methane, which traps heat and has 80 times the effect of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere, meaning small amounts can have a significant impact on global warming. Thank you for your recent ban of Atlantic Drilling, but this week brought more urgent climate news (Climate Model Predicts West Antarctic Ice Sheet Could Melt Rapidly):

We urgently need you to use your remaining time in office to ban oil and gas leasing in all federal waters and lands, something the Center for Biological Diversity and more than 45 other groups sought in a legal petition filed 3/29/16, an action you have the full legal and moral authority to take. The petition is part of a growing national Keep It in the Ground campaign urging you to halt all new fossil fuel leasing on public lands and offshore areas – a step that could keep up to 450 billion tons of carbon pollution from reaching the atmosphere. There’s a direct link between climate change and fossil fuel production on federal lands.

As with the unwanted natural gas pipelines threatening us here in MA, those leases last for decades, delaying a transition to the clean energy future the world needs. As you know all too well, offshore oil production also carries an unacceptably high risk for major oil spills like the Deepwater Horizon disaster, endangering vulnerable wildlife.Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. All the children will thank you.
Sincerely,

Make Connections to Stop the Pipeline at Grace Church in Amherst, MA on 4/16, tell your friends and share broadly:

Join us for a Map Party to stop the pipeline and to create a Fossil Free Future, Sunday 4/16 from 4-6pm.
Bring your computers and address books! We gather at the Parrish Hall at Grace Church in Amherst to Stop the Pipelines (Spring Street Entrance). We’ve heard from our politicians that six calls from constituents constitutes a mandate. Bring your friends and loved ones to brainstorm who you know in neighboring towns. Together we can stop the NED pipeline. We’ll have the tools to set up people you know to say “No New Pipelines” directly to their elected officials across the state.

We will Light Up the Map of Massachusetts:
Because “six calls constitutes a mandate”, we will show you how to connect those six voices to their representatives If we each contact people we know across Massachusetts we can together have a huge impact –more than the sum of our parts. Maps available for everyone. You’ll be surprised how many towns you know people in. Interested in babysitting/bringing your child? Please contact: AlisaPearson at earthlink dot net.
