All I Want For #MothersDay is the #ParisAgreement

ivankawhitehouse_theodore.png

This week’s Monday Action, brought to you a day early for Mothers Day from Pioneer Valley, MA Mothers Out Front: Ask Ivanka to tell her father that All We Want For Mothers Day is the Paris Agreement.

Two years ago we began Monday Actions as a weekly countdown to the Paris Climate talks. Then we celebrated what seemed to be international progress against the threat of climate change after Paris. Now, with a new administration in Washington D.C. we are in danger of pulling out of this critically important agreement.

If the world’s leaders fulfill the commitments made in Paris, our children have a chance at a healthy livable climate tomorrow.

Today, on Mothers Day and all week, we are writing, posting and Tweeting to Ivanka Trump urging her to advise the President to stay the course on the Paris Climate Agreement. Feel free to use the sample letter below or edit it in your own voice!

Dear Ivanka Trump:

As a fellow mother I think that you will understand why I am urgently concerned about climate change. Our children depend on us to do whatever we can to fight for a livable future for them.

The U.S. must remain a strong member of the Paris Climate Agreement in order for other countries to follow and reduce the use of fossil fuels and their emissions. For our children’s sake, we must remain true to the agreement that was made in 2015.

So much depends on U.S. leadership on this critical issue. If we invest in clean, renewable energy we’ll combat climate change and our economy will thrive.

Now is the time to strengthen these agreements so that all children can have a healthy environment today and a livable climate tomorrow.

Thank you for caring and speaking for the children of the world. Be their hero and their hope.

Sincerely,

See other local activities coming up here and below.

We were on the move this week:
Felicia giving Sec Beaton Lorax
Earth Week took Mothers Out Front to the Bridge of Flowers in Buckland/Shelburne Falls to welcome Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Matthew Beaton. Over 50 sign carrying protestors showed up to remind him that Otis State Forest is protected and (to paraphrase a certain Springfield born author) “Unless Someone like him Cares a Whole Awful Lot, Nothing is Going to Get Better. It’s Not.” We all signed a copy of The Lorax and gave it to him after he spoke. He said he heard our message and would read the book to his children.
The Lorax 2
At the action in Buckland and at our next stop, the Amherst Sustainability Fair on Earth Day, our Lorax No Pipeline in Otis magnets were very popular. We’ll keep them on hand when we’re at events so come over and get one for yourself.

We saw many of you at the Sustainability Fair and lots of you signed a postcard to Governor Baker which we’ll hand deliver to him just before Mothers Day. Children made Climate Hero Shields, tossed corks into the gas leaks board, and listened to climate change inspired music. Check out facebook for more about the music. And here’s how the Gazette described our booth and the Climate Transformer.

Keep Science Policy Honest, Senator

Monday Action for week of 4/3/17.
Thank you to Grist, an independent, online climate news outlet, from which we lifted liberally for this week’s action:

A bill — just passed by the U.S. House — in theory advocates for more transparency, but in practice would serve mainly to gum up the works at the agency.

The HONEST Act — or the Honest and Open New EPA Science Treatment Act — would require (among other things) any data the EPA cites to be freely available online. The EPA already publishes much of its own data online, but the new bill means any data from studies published in scientific journals would have to be acquired by the agency at an estimated cost of $250 million. The bill allows for $1 million to cover these activities.

Call Senator Markey and let him know you have his back in opposing this affront to the EPA’s ability to use all climate data available in making recommendations for policy. You can use the text below as talking points or copy-and-paste. But personalizing your message makes it count a lot more.

Dear Senator Markey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I commend you for being bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.
The EPA’s scientific integrity is under attack.

I support your opposition to H.R. 1430, the HONEST Act. There is nothing honest about it. This bill attempts to undermine the EPA’s use of scientific research that climate solutions depend on.

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the children of Massachusetts, the country, and the world.

Sincerely,

Climate Deniers Beware, Mothers are Marching

Womens_March_in_Greenfield_cropped.jpg

Monday Action for week of 1/23/17:

Climate Deniers, beware. The sleeping Giant is roused, see what you have unleashed: Millions marched on Saturday for the dignity and safety of all, the largest demonstration in history.

We are rolling up our sleeves and getting to work, building our civic muscles to protect the future for all.

For a super easy action today you can click here to add your two cents on the Western Mass Senators’ “Commonwealth Conversations.” But if you have the time…

…Our state Senate generally supports bolder climate legislation than the House. So its our Reps who really need to hear us ROAR, unless, that is, if you’re in a district of a climate champion. In that case we encourage you to call or write a thank you. Then find a friend or relative in another district who will send a message asking their Rep to co-sponsor the climate bills that were filed on Friday. The House bills deadline for cosponsors to sign on is Feb 3.

There are many opportunities to meet your Rep in person this week too! This Wednesday, 1/25, Mass Power Forward, the coalition of climate groups in MA, will give you all the info you need to lobby your Rep at the statehouse. Sign up here. See below for other local events with Western MA legislators this week.

You can use the sample talking points or copy-and-paste text below, if you like.

Dear Representative __________,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I urge you to be bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.

Now that the bills for this session have been filed, please cosponsor the bills that are designed to bring a swift, just and complete transition to a clean energy future.

As leading climate scientist, Jim Hansen says: “[T]he only way we’ll keep [fossil fuels] in the ground is with a rising fee on carbon so that we get other energies to replace the fossil fuels.”

I ask that, among other important climate bills, you co-sponsor the following bills which include a carbon fee:

An Act Combating Climate Change, Senate Docket 1021, sponsored by Senator Barrett

An Act to Promote Green Infrastructure, Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Create Jobs, House Docket 1504, sponsored by Representative Benson

An Act Relative to Creating Energy Jobs, House Docket 1948, sponsored by Representative Goldstein-Rose

An Act to Protect the Environment and Update Our Climate Action Plan, Senate Docket 1357, sponsored by Senator Pacheco

Mothers Out Front and so many others are working to get to 100% renewable energy as quickly as possible. Thank you for helping by co-sponsoring key legislation.

Sincerely,

Together we can make 2017 a watershed year for the climate.
Thank you! See you next Monday!

Still here? Want to really dig in and ask for your rep to co-sponsor more important climate bills?

Thank you President Obama, Join Us Citizen Obama

lv_obama_farewell_170110.nbcnews-ux-1080-600.jpg

Monday Action for the week of 1/16/17:

This is the last week of President Obama’s term and the beginning of an uncertain and, for many, frightening political reality at the national level. Some of us will join the hundreds of thousands marching (see info below) on January 21st. Some of us will speak out in other ways. We are motivated because we cherish our families, friends, and communities.

This week, thank Obama and ask him, as a private citizen, to join us in bringing in a swift transition to a clean energy future for our children.
Here’s your optional talking points or copy-and-paste text:

Dear President Obama,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I urge you to be ferociously bold in continuing to fight climate change and champion clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.

I’m grateful to you and to Michelle for loyally serving our country. I will miss your integrity, vision and intelligence as President. As a private citizen, you could accomplish so much. I’m writing to ask you to join me and focus your energy next on climate change. We have a window of only a few years to get it right.

The private sector can play a key role in solving the climate crisis at a time when our national government may not, as you cogently argue in your recent article in Science Magazine. Help us build a worldwide clean energy economy and build on your legacy on climate change.

I hope you’ll harken back to your roots in community organizing and treat the whole world as your community. Your efforts now, working for a swift and just transition to clean energy, will ensure that our children will have a safe and healthy future.

Mothers Out Front and so many others are working to get to 100% renewable energy as quickly as possible. Yes we can, with your help!

Promises

Today’s Monday Action: Call on U.S. Senators Warren and Markey to help lead the 100% renewable revolution so that our children’s lives may be filled with promise.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, reach for the phone or grab a postcard: Use the text below as is or adapt it, perhaps make it personal, by mentioning the ages of children you love. If you’re not in Massachusetts, you can write your own senators with the general pitch.
___________________________________________________
Dear Senators Markey and Warren,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This fight we cannot lose: Future generations depend on us to pull back from the brink. Ready or not, we are the emergency brake.

The American people were promised brighter futures and new jobs in this campaign season. We urgently need the green jobs necessary for a huge shift in energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels. The Stanford University Solutions Project has mapped out HERE what each state can do to get to 100% renewable energy. We urgently need your leadership to build just such new infrastructure for a livable future, together on this beautiful Earth.

We “need to accelerate our efforts to reduce carbon pollution and shift our energy economy to clean energy to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.” (Senator Markey, Oct. 4. 2016): The Solutions Project demonstrates how we can create good local jobs while we divest from fossil fuels. This is the new infrastructure we need, not Keystone, Dakota Access Pipeline or other proposed pipelines meant to drag filthy gas across our prairies, aquifers and back yards to sell to the highest international bidder from our coasts. For climate, natural gas is worse than coal when taking into account the methane leaked from extraction through combustion. It’s a “bridge” to nowhere.

Together, we can pull back from the brink. Thank you, as ever, for your leadership in these extraordinary times.

Sincerely,

Monday Action 11/7/16: Remember the Paris Climate Accord a year ago, when the world decided to finally act on climate change? We have good news:
The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we’d dreamed. We are encouraged that our voices are being heard. Today we are back to stop the new pipelines in our own nation, a struggle peacefully led in North Dakota by America’s original Nations:

Today’s Monday Action: Ask Elizabeth Warren (or your Senator) to Shine a Light on injustice at Standing Rock.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Maybe make it personal, mention ages of children dear to you.
___________________________________________________

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground- including natural gas.

The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we had hoped. The USA must do its part to Keep It in the Ground:

Together we will peacefully stop new pipelines: We need you to speak out for the injustices being meted out against the brave protesters at Standing Rock by fossil fuel giants. We need you to sing out that the People’s watchdog, FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, was founded to protect the People, not to fast track new pipelines, as FERC did again 10/28/16 (to pass by the Indian Point nuclear power plant in NY).

Yet FERC is literally in bed with Fossil Fuel companies (see husband and wife team) while pipeline interests set dogs on peaceful protesters and their children. This must stop– please get out your impressive megaphone for a call to action.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.
