Monday Action: Let’s Light Up the Map in MA with Climate Action

PIONEER VALLEY
cost of carbon

Here’s your Monday Action for the Week of 7/17: Call and ask if your State Rep has signed the letter in support of Rep. Benson’s carbon pricing bill, and if not, ask them to do so right away. Then ask a friend to call their Rep.

We have a brand new tool we’re about to launch called Light Up The Map (LUM for short). We’re still working on it, but we couldn’t wait any longer because we need to reach across the state to show strong support for carbon pricing among our Massachusetts Representatives. That’s what LUM is for.
You:

  • register at Light Up the Map
  • make your call or send an email
  • click that you did it and then,
  • Voila!, you’ve added another light to the map on the site.
  • send the link to LUM to someone you know elsewhere in the state, like, in the Reps’ districts listed below or others you’ll see on the LUM website.

Check back on the LUM website in a few days after you do your action, or if you have trouble with the site, because we’re going to be adding and fixing every day.

Representatives who have shown support for the bill, but haven’t yet signed the letter:

Rep. Diana DiZoglio – North Andover, Methuen, Lawrence & Haverhill.
Rep. Paul Mark – Northern parts of Franklin and Berkshire Counties.
Rep. Adrian Madaro – East Boston
Rep. Carlos Gonzalez – Downtown Springfield
Rep. Colleen Garry – Dracut and Tyngsborough
Rep. Paul Brodeur – Wakefield
Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier – Pittsfield
Rep. Edward Coppinger – West Roxbury to part of Brookline
Rep. Alice Peisch – Wellesley, Weston

Thank you! Let us know what you think of Light Up the Map, and let us know any suggestions you have by emailing us at info.ma.pioneervalley@gmail.com. We’re so excited to see how it works and hearing from you will help us make it better.

There’s actually another bill that’s close to our hearts that we want you to know about.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 18th, an important climate bill by our Amherst/Pelham/Granby rep, Solomon Goldstein-Rose, will have a hearing along with other bills 10:30am – 1pm. The bill is H.3473, An Act relative to creating energy jobs, before the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

The bill aims to make it easier for companies to develop clean energy technologies, which will stimulate investment, growth and new jobs. A carbon fee and dividend is one of 5 parts of this bill. Read more here.

Submit your written testimony for H.3473 by writing to the Chairs of the Committee:
Senator Eric Lesser: eric.lesser@masenate.gov
Representative Joseph Wagner Joseph.Wagner@mahouse.gov

Your testimony can be very simple. Tell them you care about climate change and why. Say that you support Representative Goldstein-Rose’s bill H.3473.

  • Mention that clean energy, storage and carbon pricing are all necessary to make our economy strong, grow jobs, and keep our energy dollars in state.
  • The bill does all this without appropriating any money, rather creates affordable financing, attracts private battery development with tax incentives, and has a revenue neutral carbon fee and dividend.

Remember last week we encouraged you to make videos to speak your mind to Governor Baker. Well, we still want you to do that.

MOF lined up at Gov office
More than 100 mothers and others turned out last Tuesday to Stand with Andrea outside Governor Baker’s office – to support her ongoing efforts to help stop the compressor station in Weymouth.
We are so delighted that some of you have already joined in the social media campaign we kicked off last week. We’re sure hoping many more of you will do videos, too. Short messages are great. Learn about the video campaign. See examples on our Facebook page.

What Should I Say in My Video to Gov. Baker?

1. Record your video. You’ll probably repeat this step a few times before you decide there was a reason you didn’t go into show business.
2. Post your video on your Facebook page.
Include in your post #MothersProtectCommunities @MothersOutFront.
3. Share your video on our Pioneer Valley MOF Facebook page.
4. Email videos to story@mothersoutfront.org
5. Extra credit: Tweet your video (max 45 sec) to Charlie Baker. Sample Tweet:
.
@MassGovernor #MothersProtectCommunities like #Weymouth. Go see the site. Deny the permits. @mothersoutfront @MOFpv

You are making the changes we need! Thank you for your effort. Please share Monday Actions with friends.

Spectacle Pond in Otis State Forest

1/2/17: In honor of the children of the world and YOUR work for a clean energy future, the Pioneer Valley team of Mothers Out Front presents this first Monday Action of the New Year:

Today, please call Governor Baker at 617-725-4005 or 888-870-7770 and leave a message. It will take 5 minutes or less! For brevity use the bold text.

I’m calling, Governor Baker, to ask you to strengthen our environmental agencies and protect the Commonwealth and future generations from unneeded and damaging gas pipelines.

You often state that pipelines are a “federal matter,” as if Massachusetts can do nothing. There’s many ways you could direct state agencies to take a stand. Yet you recently issued $98 million in budget cuts that “disproportionately devastate agencies protecting our environment and public health” (as noted by the Environmental League of Massachusetts).

I’m alarmed to learn that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would sacrifice public conservation land in Otis State Forest for a gas pipeline. Your Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) has entered into a settlement with Kinder Morgan, rather than stand up for our constitution which safeguards our conservation land in Article 97. Your agencies did not even follow their own no-net-loss Article 97 land disposition policy. Now Upton State Forest is threatened by Spectra’s planned pipeline in the same way.  Please change course!

You could have directed your Department of Environmental Protection, or DEP, to more rigorously apply the state’s water quality standards and deny the 401 for the Kinder Morgan project. And, regarding the Spectra’s compressor station slated for Weymouth, your DEP issued a superseding order, seeking to undermine local control by overriding the local conservation commission’s wetlands permitting decision. We need better.

As a father, as a fervent public servant who has dedicated his life to service, we need you to stand up to the pipeline companies, and help move us towards a sustainable energy future.

Governor, I thank you in advance for your actions to protect, defend and uphold our State constitution.

New fossil fuel infrastructure is not for the Common Good: We all must be urgently concerned about climate change, as future children are depending on us to leave them a livable world. We have a narrow window, but it can still be done if we can move to 100% renewables by 2030. Thank you for doing your part.

Sincerely,

Price Carbon, Governor

12/12/16 Monday Action: Tell Governor Baker we want a Carbon Fee and Rebate! A comment page is open NOW to influence the regulations that are about to be recommended by the administration. Use the text below as a guide.
___________________________________
Dear Governor,

I am urgently concerned about climate change.  I know you are, too, and appreciate the work you and your staff are doing to fight it. However, we need to do more, including enlisting the help of everyone in our state.

To enlist everyone’s help, we need to put a price on carbon pollution. Conservative and liberal economists agree that this is the most effective way to fight climate change and to build a stronger economy at the same time. Burning fossil fuels has buried costs that aren’t captured in their price, such as health problems and sea level rise, among others.

A similar program has already been successful in British Columbia, Canada.  Fossil fuel use is down and the economy has improved through their carbon fee and rebate program.

Massachusetts has always been a leader, taking essential bold new steps for the betterment of our society.  It’s time to do so again.  Please enact a fair carbon pricing fee and rebate program to fight climate change, accelerate the switch to renewable energy, benefit low-income people who are most vulnerable, create more jobs and attract clean energy investment.

We must protect our most vulnerable citizens and future generations. Please be bold! Introduce legislation and use your executive powers to make carbon pollution pricing a reality, so that everyone is motivated to cut fossil fuel use and move us toward a sustainable, renewable energy economy.

Future generations will thank you, including the children you love.

Sincerely,

We Go High, Senator

12/5/16 Monday Action:
When they go low, we go high. Tell your State Senator that more is riding on Massachusetts taking the high road toward a renewable energy future than ever before. We need to go into high gear growing our green economy.

As we celebrate the Water Protectors’ success in persuading Obama to reconsider the permit for the route of the Dakota Access Pipeline, we also know that we have much work ahead to phase out the use of fossil fuels.

The natural gas industry knows it’s running out of time. That’s why there’s a mad rush to put in new pipelines to meet the supposed increasing demand for energy. But they haven’t fixed the thousands of leaks across the state which means dangerous methane is escaping, accelerating the climate crisis, hurting our health and wasting our money.

The cost to our children’s health and the actual cost to ratepayers (almost a billion dollars each year just in the Boston area) cannot continue. See below to join a social media outcry on Saturday 12/10 to call attention to the leaks in your area.

Find the gas leak that matters most to you on this HEET leaks map. Click on the marker to see the address and use it in the talking points below where it says THESE LEAKS. Or copy and paste and mention the address of “your” gas leak in your email.
Please note: Calls and letters really count more on the state level. So if you can today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone.

————————————————–
Dear Senator Rosenberg,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. I know you are making a difference through your leadership opposing the pipeline tax and supporting renewables, conservation and energy efficiency. Please make sure the bills that you and other legislators introduce for the next session will:

1. Halt the building or expanding of natural gas infrastructure.
Instead of making consumers pay for new pipelines, make the gas companies pay to fix THESE LEAKS in the old ones.
2. Expand programs for conservation and energy efficiency.
We’re national leaders in energy efficiency here in MA, but THESE LEAKS are creating as much climate warming emissions as we’ve saved with all the energy efficiency programs so far.
3. Speed our complete and rapid transition to 100% renewable energy.
We need to build the renewable energy infrastructure NOW.

Thank you for protecting us and future generations.

Timely Action Extras:
Mothers Out Front is calling attention to the gas leaks across the state by taking pictures of our families where leaks are in our towns and cities. Hold a sign that asks whether that leak is a super emitter (gas companies aren’t required to measure the volume of leaks!). Take your pictures ahead of time, but wait until Saturday 12/10, to post and tweet pictures to create a social media storm. Include your town, use the hashtag #FixTheLeaks and tag your gas company in your tweets and posts. For Berkshire Gas, use @AVANGRID, and also mention BG. If you’re in Columbia Gas territory please don’t target them because they are working closely with us. You can still share and retweet photos from other communities to contribute to the storm! On Saturday, check out our Facebook page and Twitter @MOFpv and please share and retweet all day! For more info contact amherstamr at gmail dot com.

Want to learn how to use Twitter or Facebook for getting attention to climate? We’re offering online seminars. If you’re curious, contact Andra: amherstamr at gmail dot com.

Support the Boston Gas Leaks Ordinance. This will be a model that towns and cities can replicate across the state to mandate strong local requirements for fixing leaks. Click here to sign the petition.

Dear Governor,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. All future children are depending on us to leave them a livable world. We have a narrow window, but it can still be done if we can Keep It In the Ground (which means no more digging for fossil fuels).

Seriously combating climate change requires ramping down fossil fuel energy use while ramping up renewables, storage of renewable energy, and reducing demand in many ways including energy efficiency. Ramping down fossil fuel energy use requires rejecting a massive build out of natural gas infrastructure. We need your help to stop us from digging ourselves deeper into this hole.

Please show us how much you love your children and dream for their children’s children: Together let’s make a plan to become 85% fossil fuel free by 2030. That means keeping it in the ground, including natural gas.
