Guest Action: 100% Renewable in Mass

PIONEER VALLEY

Here is your Monday Action for the week of 9/11/17: Tell your State Representative that we need 100% renewable electricity by 2035

[Editor’s Note: Thank you to our guest bloggers from Climate Action Now Western Mass (CAN) for writing about the 100% Renewable Energy bill. As we watch Irma pounding the Carribean, Cuba and Florida this weekend, we rededicate ourselves to minimizing the worst effects of climate change through our actions in Massachusetts.]

This is a CRUCIAL time for Massachusetts legislation.

An Act transitioning Massachusetts to 100 percent renewable energy H.3395/S.1849, will accelerate the growth of clean energy, promote interagency collaboration to achieve 100 percent renewable energy economy-wide, by 2050 (including electricity, heating, transportation, and other sectors), and 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035. It also sets out clear, enforceable goals and requirements to ensure we achieve that objective.

Please take these three important steps:

1. FIND OUT WHO YOUR LEGISLATORS ARE AND THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION HERE. Simply enter your address and zip code.

2. TO SUBMIT TESTIMONY in support of H.3395/S.1849, the 100% Renewable MA Bill, click here. Copy, paste and customize the letter and send it to the emails or addresses listed on the letter. Send a copy to your legislators and to info@climateactionnowma.org.

3. MAKE A PHONE CALL TO FOLLOW UP ON YOUR LETTERS OR EMAILS.

Join us on Beacon Hill for a unity rally for clean energy at noon. Then come to the public hearing from 1pm to 5pm before the Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy (TUE) Committee.

WHEN

September 19, 2017
RALLY at 12pm
Hearing 1pm – 5pm

WHERE

Massachusetts State House
24 Beacon St

BONUS: Amplify! Personally ask a friend in another part of the state to do this. Forward this Monday Action to them. State action on climate is all-important now.

Inconvenient Sequel 2

This is your Monday Action for the week of 8/14/17: Take action at a showing of An Inconvenient Sequel.

We saw many of you at the 7:00pm sold out Amherst Cinema showing of An Inconvenient Sequel on Friday evening. Thanks to Ben Hellerstein for speaking about the 100% Renewable bill that Environment Mass took the leadership on writing. Over a hundred audience members signed letters to the chairs of the MA Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy Committee to support the 100% Renewable bill H.3395/S.1849.

This week we encourage you to go to a showing of An Inconvenient Sequel.

  • Show up with 20 copies of this 100% Renewable bill letter and some pens.
    • Ask people on their way out to sign two copies to be delivered to the committee chairmen in person by Climate Action Now.
  • Bring the signed letters next Monday, 8/21, to the Amherst Mothers Out Front Family PICNIC at Groff Park with special guest, Rep Solomon Goldstein-Rose. Bring the whole family for a potluck picnic and participatory, climate entertainment. 5:00-7:00.
    • Can’t go to the picnic? Come to the CAN meeting on 8/28.
      • Can’t go to the CAN meeting? Mail the letters yourself!

Rep, The World We Love is 100% Renewable Energy

join the parade - WWL smallest

Here’s your Monday Action from the Pioneer Valley, MA Mothers Out Front, for the week of 6/26/17.

This week’s Monday Action is to ask your State Representative to support 100% Renewable Energy and join The World We Love puppet pageant (pictured above) and direct action this Saturday in Northampton. See below for other upcoming events as well.

On Saturday, July 1, please join us in calling for 100% Renewable Energy at The World We Love. People of all ages, giant puppets, activists, and musicians will parade through the streets of Northampton, watch a play in Pulaski Park and then fan out into Northampton to speak to individuals and businesses about their part in reducing Massachusetts energy use and becoming 100% renewable. See details below.

We’re joining a nationwide commitment to 100% renewable energy. Ask your State Rep to support a bill calling for 100% Renewable Energy which was introduced by Rep. Sean Garballey and Rep. Marjorie Decker (H.3395) in the House, and by Sen. Jamie Eldridge (S.1849) in the Senate. It sets a bold goal of getting our electricity from all clean energy sources by 2035. The rest of the economy, including buildings, transportation, industry, would go 100% renewable energy by 2050.

Western Mass Representatives who signed on as cosponsors of the bill are:
Reps Solomon Goldstein-Rose and Peter Kocot in Hampshire County;
Rep Stephen Kulik in Franklin County;
Reps Gailanne Cariddi, Paul Mark, and William Pignatelli in Berkshire County;
Reps Carlos Gonzalez, Jose Tosado, Aaron Vega, and John Velis in Hampden County.

If your Rep is on the list of supporters, thank them and encourage them to get their colleagues on board.
If your Rep isn’t on the list, ask them to support H.3395/S.1849.

You can use the text below as talking points in calling your Rep, or in an email. Just be sure to personalize it by mentioning the children you love or other reasons you’re motivated to act on climate.

Dear Representative {YOUR REP},

I am urgently concerned about climate change. The children I love depend on us for a livable future. I want you to accelerate the pace of change in policies to ensure those children have hope for their own and their world’s health.

I’m asking for your {or thanking you for your} support of the 100% Renewable Energy bill, H.3395/S.1849. It will help make a swift, complete, and just transition from fossil fuels to the clean energy future that is within our grasp. The bill accelerates the annual increase in the amount of clean energy electric companies must include in their portfolio. It also calls for workforce development in clean energy, and directs state agencies to study and implement clear strategies for attaining the goals.

Please work with your colleagues to gather support in the House for passing this bill this session. There is no time to lose.

Thank you for your work on behalf of my family and the clean, healthy future we want.

Sincerely,
