Moms and dads join Weymouth resident Andrea Honore in the Governor’s office, waiting for him to meet with her about the Weymouth Compressor Station. She’s been there every day during her lunch break for over 70 days. Ask the Governor to visit Weymouth with Andrea. Monday Action for the week of 7/3/17.
This week’s Monday Action is to tell Governor Baker to oppose the effort to build the Weymouth compressor station and to refuse to let the cost of building fossil fuel infrastructure be passed on to the public. Also, please look below for local activities in the Pioneer Valley.
The good news is that another gas pipeline, Access Northeast, that would have cut through communities in MA, CT, and NY, has been shelved for the foreseeable future! YAY TEAM! Your calls and emails do make a difference! Savor the win on this Independence Day weekend.
But our work is not over. The South Shore was, up until last week, facing two projects that depended on the Weymouth Compressor station: Atlantic Bridge and Access Northeast. Spectra is still awaiting permit approvals from Massachusetts for Atlantic Bridge. Though ANE has been withdrawn, our fight against the Weymouth compressor station continues. We still have to defeat Atlantic Bridge.
Part of the reason Access Northeast has been shelved is because the economics of fossil fuel infrastructure don’t work. Last year, the State Supreme Court shot down the Baker Administration’s pipeline tariff. However, utilities and pipeline companies remain determined to find a way to make ratepayers – us – pay to build infrastructure we don’t want or need.
Our US Senators Markey and Warren have taken a stand against the Weymouth compressor station. The candidates for Governor have all spoken out in opposition to it. It’s time for Governor Baker to take action to protect our neighbors, our children, our clean energy economy.
Call the Governor. Use the text here as talking points. Or email, but be sure to put it your way. Say why you care.
Dear Governor Baker,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. The children I love depend on us for a livable future. I want you to accelerate the pace of change in policies to ensure those children have hope for their own and their world’s health.
The Weymouth compressor station is not just a federal issue as you’ve said before, it’s a local and state issue that you have the power to allow or deny.
Thank you for your work on behalf of my family and the clean, healthy future we want.
