Stan, say it’s not so.

Monday Action for the week of 9/19/16: Yikes. We thought you got it, Stan! Set the MA State Senate President straight and tell him not to believe the glossy brochure.

—————————————————–
Dear State Senate President Rosenberg,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it.

I am very concerned that your recent statement in the latest Rosenberg Report about the Berkshire Gas moratorium (“Promoting the use of natural gas as an environmentally attractive fuel is the only viable long-term solution to increase new sources of gas supply to meet the growing needs of our communities.” )

Were you saying that natural gas is environmentally attractive, or that the only way to expand the use of natural gas in our communities is to promote it as if it were environmentally attractive? When full lifecycle impacts are taken into account, natural gas has no greenhouse gas benefit over coal.

Natural gas is mostly methane, a greenhouse gas 86 times more powerful than CO2 over a 20-year timeframe.

Focusing on expanding our natural gas infrastructure and use is a recipe for disaster. Please stand up for the climate and push Berkshire Gas for serious energy efficiency measures, such as fixing the leaks (see the map of gas leaks here) and more broadly, please take further steps to improve energy efficiency incentives and to jumpstart the renewable energy storage industry in Massachusetts. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Obama, Stop the Dakota Pipeline

obama

Monday Action for 9/12/16: Urge Obama to kill the Dakota Pipeline. He could. He rejected Keystone and it’s back here in a different guise.

Maybe you signed an email about this already? Know this: Obama really responds to personal notes and calls. Did you know he personally wrote back to our Monday Actionists? Climate Change is his stated issue (see this week’s New York Times article) yet the man really needs to hear from voters – that’s what makes him act. Let’s help him out:
————————————————–
Dear President Obama,
Like you, I think the trends are terrifying: I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need a call to action, a nationwide War Effort against Climate Change, as Bill McKibben described recently. You can set the tone for your successor.

McKibben reminds us that your administration announced months ago that new projects would now have to pass a climate test before being approved–we need that test applied to the Dakota Access pipeline. And we need to make sure that anything in Indian country never gets built again without full tribal consultation.

President Obama, it’s urgent that you push as hard as you can. We need you. All our children need you. Thank you so much.

Dear Governor,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. All future children are depending on us to leave them a livable world.

So far this year, every single month has shattered a global heat record. We are at war and we need to win like we won WWII. Now more than ever we need our leaders to do everything possible to prevent the worst impacts from global warming. You, Governor, have the power to dramatically cut carbon pollution from the biggest source in the U.S. — power plants — and shift to a renewable energy future. Governor, our state can be a leader in using conservation to meet demand. We urge you to promote policies to bring robust conservation programs, such as demand response, to the entire state.

Can you tell me why we don’t have fleets of hydrogen cars like California and fueling stations with H2 made from renewable sources like those in Munich, Germany? We need to lead! Our children’s and our climate’s health depend on you. Thank you for doing more than you ever thought possible. There is not a moment to lose. Everything is at stake and we must win this war.

Sincerely,

Pres Obama, Cool it on the Coolants

Monday Action for the week of 8/1/16: Urge Obama to push for an aggressive phase-down of the less well known greenhouse gases, HFCs.

Dear President Obama,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. Therefore I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. There are also other gases dangerously warming the planet.

We know that the coolants now used in aerosols, air-conditioners and refrigerators are better for the ozone, but still dangerous: these hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, are becoming more of a threat to planetary warming. Currently, the contribution of HFCs to greenhouse warming is 1% of that of CO2, but by 2050, if we follow the “business as usual” path, that contribution is likely to increase to 10% of that of CO2.

Luckily, reducing HFCs offers a huge benefit for little comparative cost. Please continue to push for more aggressive world-wide phase-down. We can and must be as successful as we were with CFCs that threatened to grow the now healed ozone hole. We must freeze the global growth of HFCs by 2021 at the latest, and rapidly make the transition to more sustainable alternatives such as ammonia.

President Obama, it’s urgent that you push as hard as you can. We need you. Your girls need you. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Still here?

We have another concern you could share with the President if you want:
“I also strongly disagree with your assistant secretary of energy for fossil fuels, Chris Smith, who has said that you don’t want to Keep It In The Ground. Please stop listening to the fossil fuel lobby. Keep It In The Ground we must, and we shall. We must break free from fossil fuels today: Where are our US-made hydrogen cars powered by renewable energy? Toyota and Hyundai can do it- so can we!”

Breaking News:

The Massachussetts Omnibus Energy bill passed the MA House and Senate last night in the final hour of the month, without much discussion. The most exciting part of the bill is that it adds 1600 megawatts of off-shore wind power which is the biggest procurement for wind in any state. We’re also pleased with the inclusion of some new regulations of gas leaks we asked for. Unfortunately the bill didn’t include the pipeline tax ban or any solar. So we’ll be back next session pushing for more of what we need from our state legislators. Meanwhile Governor Baker will get this bill.

An Energy Bill for All Children’s Future

Today’s Monday Action: Representative Dempsey, the Next Generation is Depending on You to Make the MA Energy Bill the Strongest Possible.

State_House.JPGThe omnibus Energy Bill has been through the House, the Senate, and will be completed in conference committee at the State House THIS WEEK, before the August recess begins. This bill will set critical parts of our state’s energy policy for the near future. For the sake of all children, we are pushing for the most visionary bill that is politically possible.

Mothers Out Front is part of a coordinated effort by the Mass Power Forward coalition to CALL the House conference committee members. We’re focusing your attention on Representative Brian Dempsey of Haverhill. Please take some time now to think about who you know in Haverhill, or near Haverhill (they might know someone in Haverhill!). It makes an impact for conferees to hear from any state resident, but for a big impact, they need to hear from their own constituents.

If you have never called before, now is the time to gather all your courage and do it. It’s fast, you can read straight from the script below, and an aide will take the message.

PLEASE MAKE A CALL if you can. We’re all going to do it together! If you’re not able to, you can copy and paste some of the text below into your own email.

Script:

My name is _________ and I’m calling to leave a message for Representative Dempsey about the energy bill (at that point the person answering the phone might transfer you to the aide handling energy issues. Then you can begin again) My name is _________, I’m a [mother, father, grandparent, aunt,…] and I’m urgently concerned about climate change. We need to make a rapid transition to clean energy for the sake of all children.  I’m calling to urge Chair Dempsey to make this happen by including the following 3 provisions in the final energy bill:

*first, an increase in the RPS to 2% (The Renewal Portfolio Standard is the amount of renewal energy the utilities are required to purchase).

*second, an investment in wind energy in the amount of 2,000 Megawatts

*and third, a prohibition against charging electric customers  for gas pipelines

Please give him my message.
Thank you.

Thursday is Vote on MA Senate’s Omnibus Bill

June 27, 2016

Today’s Monday Action: Senators, amend the Omnibus Energy Bill NOW!

Massachusetts’ energy future is being discussed in the Senate NOW. Can you call or write your state Senator by Thursday? Last Friday, lawmakers in the Massachusetts Senate released its version of the “omnibus” energy bill, S2372. The good news is that S2372 does even more to promote clean energy than the House bill that passed a couple of weeks ago. But the Senate bill neither addresses the thousands of leaks in our natural gas pipelines, nor does it prohibit making consumers pay for unnecessary new gas infrastructure or improve the entirely unnecessary solar bottleneck in MA.

There is time to further improve the bill before the Senate votes on Thursday. Contact your Senator by Thursday noon (contact info for your Senator is here)! Here’s a script you can use when you call, or you can cut and paste into an email if you write:

My name is _______ from TOWN. I’m happy that S2372 is strong on clean energy! I’d like to ask you to support or co-sponsor the following amendments to the bill:

1. Senator Eldridge’s amendment to require utilities, rather than ratepayers like me, to pay for natural gas that’s lost through leaks or unaccounted for, and to add provisions for worker safety.

2. Senator Jehlen’s amendment that prohibits the utilities from charging electricity customers, like me, for the construction of new gas pipelines.

3. Senator Eldridge’s 3 solar amendments to address the regressive nature of H4173 and to support and encourage the purchase electric vehicles by the state and by consumers.

President Obama, Use Your Authority to Keep It In The Ground

Today’s Monday Action: Urge Obama to ban oil and gas leasing in all federal waters.
————————————————–
Dear President Obama,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. Natural gas is mainly composed of methane, which traps heat and has 80 times the effect of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere, meaning small amounts can have a significant impact on global warming. Thank you for your recent ban of Atlantic Drilling, but this week brought more urgent climate news (Climate Model Predicts West Antarctic Ice Sheet Could Melt Rapidly):

We urgently need you to use your remaining time in office to ban oil and gas leasing in all federal waters and lands, something the Center for Biological Diversity and more than 45 other groups sought in a legal petition filed 3/29/16, an action you have the full legal and moral authority to take. The petition is part of a growing national Keep It in the Ground campaign urging you to halt all new fossil fuel leasing on public lands and offshore areas – a step that could keep up to 450 billion tons of carbon pollution from reaching the atmosphere. There’s a direct link between climate change and fossil fuel production on federal lands.

As with the unwanted natural gas pipelines threatening us here in MA, those leases last for decades, delaying a transition to the clean energy future the world needs. As you know all too well, offshore oil production also carries an unacceptably high risk for major oil spills like the Deepwater Horizon disaster, endangering vulnerable wildlife.Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. All the children will thank you.
