Monday Action: Gratitude

Mothers Out Front Massachusetts
PIONEER VALLEY

This week’s Monday Action starts a series of actions expressing gratitude by Laura Friedland-Kays, founding memberPioneer Valley MOF

Offering our support to people who are doing good work to address climate change can encourage and fortify our champions, and reaffirm the deep value of their efforts. Today, let’s send a thank-you to Representative Jim McGovern for his climate change work, and sign the petition he posted on his Facebook page. A few days ago, McGovern wrote:

“Devastating hurricanes. Massive wildfires. Historic floods. People struggling to survive, without power or even clean drinking water for weeks on end. And that’s just here in America. It’s even worse around the world. All thanks to global climate change. And now we’ve learned that Donald Trump’s EPA is planning to undo President Obama’s landmark Clean Power Plan.” Sign McGovern’s petition: tell the EPA to keep the Clean Power Plan.

Take a moment to go to McGovern’s Facebook page, like his post or call, email or mail a quick “Thanks for your strong leadership on climate change”.

PIONEER VALLEY

We write our elected officials every week, so they know what we need them to do:

Monday Action Motto: The best thing to do when you feel hopeless is one simple thing. Then make it a habit and do it with friends. It is fun and effective. And there has never been a better time for your involvement.

YOUR MONDAY ACTION

WHAT? Save the electric vehicle tax credit!

WHY?  The tax legislation filed in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month would repeal the existing federal tax credit (up to $7,500!) for the purchase of an electric vehicle (EV). We need to be making it easier for consumers to switch to EVs and supporting the EV industry. Rapidly moving away from gas-fueled vehicles is a necessary component of any climate health plan.

HOW? Contact your representative, Jim McGovern (Outside of Massachusetts’ 2nd District? Find your representative here.)

FOR EXAMPLE (but your personal message/experience is always more important, Jim McGovern said so himself…):
Dear Representative McGovern,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. We need to rapidly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

That’s why I am thankful for federal and state electric vehicle purchase rebates. These incentives are an important part of the strategy to shift consumers towards EVs. We know that combustion engine vehicles add dangerous amounts of carbon dioxide to our atmosphere each day. A rapid and thorough transition to EVs is a necessary part of any responsible climate plan.

If the federal EV tax rebate program is repealed, as indicated in the newly proposed tax legislation, we could see a slowing of the EV market. This is the time to accelerate, not hamper, the transition to green energy in all markets. Please voice your opposition to this proposed legislation and its irresponsible repeal the federal EV tax rebate.

I know that sustainability is an important issue for you, and am counting on you to send a clear message that federal legislation must be used to make responsible, forward-thinking, climate-supportive policies.
With sincere appreciation,

Clean Air is a Human Right

Monday Action for the week of 2/27/17: Tell your U.S. Representative to oppose a bill that would remove the very words “greenhouse gases” from the Clean Air Act.

Call or write, but make the sample words below your own, add the ages of the children in your life, tell what makes you care. Calls or handwritten letters are best, but you can copy and paste your message into an email too. Contact information for Congressman McGovern is below, with a link to find your U.S. Rep if you’re in another district.

Dear Congressman McGovern,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. Future generations are depending on us to transition quickly to clean energy for their health and the health of our climate.

HR 637, the “Stopping EPA Overreach Act,” is an attack on the Clean Air Act. It would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, or sulfer hexafluoride emissions.

HR 637 would be a devastating strike against the 2016 Kigali Accord which reduces HFCs by 90% globally and took years of painstaking negotiation to accomplish.

Please speak ferociously against this bill. We need you to fight for our clean air and a healthy future for the children of the world.

Thank you, in the name of future generations.

Sincerely,

Clean Elections, like Electricity, are Fossil Fuel Free

2016-02-15-greenfield-berkshire-gas-march-bridge-to-nowhereToday’s Monday Action: Ask your Congressperson to sign the pledge not to take fossil fuel money.

We need ten people to ask each of our Congresspeople this week- Watch the clicker go up on the pledge! It’s pretty neat. Can we do it?
—————————–
Dear Congressman McGovern,
Every opportunity I have, I vote for the strongest climate advocates because I am urgently concerned about climate change. Future generations are depending on us to transition carbon-neutral energy by 2030.

I appreciate your strong public stance against the Kinder Morgan NED pipeline, and your efforts in Congress to prevent fast-tracking of gas infrastructure projects.  As you know, gas is not a bridge fuel. It is a bridge to nowhere.

Will you pledge not to take fossil fuel money? Please sign this pledge.

Thank you, in the name of future generations,

Still here?

Extra credit 1: Carbon Tax in WA- Do you have friends in Washington State? Call ’em. Help get the first carbon tax enacted in the United States this November. Call people you know in the state of Washington, and ask them to vote for the carbon tax ballot initiative I-732. Some environmental groups want to spend the money raised by the tax. That’s not a proposal that will gain bipartisan support like I-732 which is a revenue neutral tax. There are provisions in this initiative for the working poor to get a rebate and it lowers the regressive sales tax.

Tell your friends in Washington state that if they approve the carbon tax, MA and many other states will follow their lead. Their vote could lead to a national carbon fee and rebate which is one of the things we need to make fossil fuels history. For more info: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/want-help-washington-state-adopt-revenue-neutral-carbon-tax/

Extra credit 2: Comments to MA DEP to cut emissions, fix gas leaks:

Submit comments about why the MA Department of Environmental Protection needs to cut GHG emissions fast.
On Wednesday in Boston and on Thursday in Worcester, DEP will hold hearings on setting regulations for fixing methane leaks and other updates to meet 2020 goals of the Global Warming Solutions Act. Tell them why it matters to you that they set the bar high. http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/massdep/air/climate/section3d-comments.html

We Need More Like You, Congressman

We’re “Taking Steps to a Renewable Future” this week. Walk with us and the Sugar Shack Alliance to protest the proposed Northeast Energy Direct Pipeline. Mothers Out Front Pioneer Valley will walk as a group on Saturday afternoon when the walk goes through Greenfield. Join us for the walk, then lunch and creative family and youth empowerment activities, including a Pipelines 101 workshop (child care available). See details below.

Today’s Monday Action: Tell your congressperson you oppose natural gas pipelines and want a fair price on carbon.
—————————–
Dear Representative McGovern,
Every opportunity I have, I vote for the strongest climate advocates because I am urgently concerned about climate change. Future generations are depending on us. We therefore urgently need you to protect us against new fossil fuel infrastructure including the proposed Kinder Morgan NED (Northeast Energy Direct) “natural” gas pipeline. Gas is not a bridge fuel. It is a bridge to nowhere.

I applaud your strong opposition to the Kinder Morgan Northeast Energy Direct pipeline. The threat of massive environmental impacts for limited economic potential is right in our backyard. Instead of funding new fossil fuel infrastructure, we should continue to lead the way in renewable energy, which is truly our best bet at improving safe, cost effective energy access in Mass.

To make that work, we need you to make fair carbon pricing part of the national climate strategy. In survey after survey, over 90% of economists say the most efficient and effective way to reduce climate pollution is through market-based policies that put a price on carbon.

Join us for the walk! A perfect chance to show your support again is this week, when many of your constituents will be participating in a 53 mile walk of the proposed pipeline, March 17 – 20th, organized by sugarshackalliance.org. Mothers Out Front Pioneer Valley will be joining the walkers as they parade through Greenfield on Saturday afternoon. See you there!

Week 20: Congressman, We’re Half-Way There

It’s week 20 of our 40-week count down on the Road to the UN Climate Summit in Paris.

Take 5-minutes to tell your U.S. representative that Climate Change is the burning issue of our time:
Your optional copy-and-paste text:
Dear Congressman McGovern,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. We urge you to be bold in fighting climate change.

I want to thank you for your ongoing support of USDA’s Rural Development program, Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). It was heartening to learn of the recent grants awarded to support renewable energy and energy efficiency projects on several farms right in the Pioneer Valley.

Sadly, at least one of these farms would be drastically affected by the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline (e.g. Clarkdale Fruit Farms, Inc. in Deerfield). We cannot allow that to happen. I urge you to continue taking bold measures to stop the pipeline and facilitating real solutions (like these renewable energy farm projects) that stop climate change.

Sincerely,

Add spice to your message:
• Ask McGovern: “What are your official positions on 1) the solar net-metering cap and 2) a Fair Price On Carbon? Also, how can you effect Congress on these issues?”
————————————————

“Under state law, utilities can only hook up so many solar energy projects to their systems under the so-called “net metering” cap [set at just 2% of each municipality’s total energy consumption!] which limits the amount of excess power utilities have to buy back from solar installations. In the part of the state served by National Grid, that limit may be hit today or tomorrow, which would force companies in the solar industry to rapidly readjust.”

A Fair Price on Carbon Details:
At its most basic, carbon pricing addresses the climate crisis by penalizing polluters for the carbon dioxide emissions that they pour into the atmosphere. Better Future Project, 350 MA, Climate XChange, Clean Water Action, the Environmental League of Massachusetts, and more are working to pass a carbon pricing bill in Massachusetts.

———————————-
Wait, you want to do even more?!

If you haven’t done so already, would you consider switching to clean energy in your own home through Mass Energy? We support Mass Energy because they are local, offer MA-based renewable infrastructure (and fund it), and they are a non-profit (so the added differential is tax deductible). Details here.

Consider doing this “switch” even if you rent, or are one of the people on the vanguard who have put solar on your roof, geothermal heat and other new technologies in your home, and call MassSave every chance you get to take advantage of their conservation subsidies available to all utility customers to the tune of $2000 per cycle.
