Defend Us, People’s Lawyer

Monday Action for the week of 2/6/17: Urge the Attorney General to prevent Kinder Morgan from cutting trees in our protected lands.

We can stop pipelines right in our own backyard. We did it before with NED and we’ll do it again.

Mothers Out Front opposes all new fossil fuel infrastructure because only clean energy infrastructure can create the livable future we want for all children everywhere.

Those of you who’ve been following Monday Actions and the news from Sandisfield, MA know that a part of the beautiful Otis State Forest is on the verge of being taken by Kinder Morgan for their Connecticut Expansion Pipeline project.

There are still legal and procedural ways our allies are fighting for Otis, including ongoing appeals concerning a federally required water quality certification from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. So our Attorney General Healey can still fight the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to stop Kinder Morgan from cutting the trees that our state constitution’s Article 97 protects.

Please call AG Maura Healey’s office and use the ideas in the text below to express your concern. If you’re not in the habit of calling yet, try writing a postcard. If you email, change the text, make it personal, say what motivates you to act on climate change.

Dear Attorney General Healey,

Because I am alarmed that climate change threatens the health and future of our children, I am grateful to you for standing up to Exxon Mobil. You are fighting, and so far winning, with such courage, to show that Exxon knew their actions were causing climate change and they hid the evidence.

We need the same fight from you right here in the Commonwealth. I want you to hold Kinder Morgan/Tennessee Gas to the same standards.  We rely on you to uphold our right to clean air and clean water, and the protections of our environment under Article 97 of our state constitution.
A lot of us asked your office to appeal the Berkshire Superior Court decision that the Federal Natural Gas Act preempted our state constitution. We wish you had fought Kinder Morgan’s Connecticut Expansion pipeline project all the way to the Supreme Court. But there is still something you can do.
Now, Kinder Morgan has renewed its request for permission to cut trees in Otis State Forest.  We need you to tell FERC that Kinder Morgan cannot cut trees in our state forest when Massachusetts is in the middle of conducting a review of whether a permit in Sandisfield will really protect our wetlands and water ways.

Please challenge FERC’s authority to take actions that could damage our natural resources when numerous matters relating to this proposed pipeline are still being challenged. If there was ever a time to assert our state’s rights, it is NOW.

Thank you,

200 Nations, Together

paris-one-climate-one-worldwomen-at-standing-rock-small

Monday Action 11/7/16: Remember the Paris Climate Accord a year ago, when the world decided to finally act on climate change? We have good news:
The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we’d dreamed. We are encouraged that our voices are being heard. Today we are back to stop the new pipelines in our own nation, a struggle peacefully led in North Dakota by America’s original Nations:

Today’s Monday Action: Ask Elizabeth Warren (or your Senator) to Shine a Light on injustice at Standing Rock.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Maybe make it personal, mention ages of children dear to you.
___________________________________________________

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground- including natural gas.

The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we had hoped. The USA must do its part to Keep It in the Ground:

Together we will peacefully stop new pipelines: We need you to speak out for the injustices being meted out against the brave protesters at Standing Rock by fossil fuel giants. We need you to sing out that the People’s watchdog, FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, was founded to protect the People, not to fast track new pipelines, as FERC did again 10/28/16 (to pass by the Indian Point nuclear power plant in NY).

Yet FERC is literally in bed with Fossil Fuel companies (see husband and wife team) while pipeline interests set dogs on peaceful protesters and their children. This must stop– please get out your impressive megaphone for a call to action.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Sincerely,

Senator, FERC Hurts Us

2015-07-29 Greenfield FERC Do Your Job

Monday Action for week of 10/3/16: Direct your Senators to reform the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC. FERC oversees gas pipelines that cross state lines. Their mission should be to protect us from climate change not accelerate it by approving nearly every pipeline that’s proposed.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Use the text below as is or adapt it, maybe make it personal, by mentioning the ages of children you love. If you’re not in Massachusetts, you can write your own senators with the general pitch above.

___________________________________________________
Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. We can’t lose this fight: Future generations depend on us to pull ourselves back from the brink. Together, we can. But we urgently need to source 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We need to be ramping down our use of fossil fuels, not building more pipelines and we need a real price on carbon ASAP.

Senator Warren, we watched with gratitude and awe as you demanded straightforward answers from Mr. Stumpf of Wells Fargo, never allowing him to evade your questions.

The fossil fuel industry has been stealing from citizens for decades with the help of FERC. We’ve had private property taken by eminent domain, our water poisoned by fracking, and our children’s and grandchildren’s future compromised by climate change. FERC continues to approve pipelines that don’t have all their permits, that plow through sensitive environments in conservation areas, and that are headed to export terminals. The Administration’s directive that all federal agencies have to consider the impact of their decisions on climate change applies to FERC too.

It’s past time to reform FERC! We’re asking you to bring the same tenacity to questioning FERC’s mission as you did to the banking industry. Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champion. The children and I thank you.

Dear Senators Markey and Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to source 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We need to fix gas leaks, not build more pipelines and we need a carbon tax ASAP.

Thank you for continuing to seek more detailed information on how FERC chose NRG to do the environmental review of the Atlantic Bridge pipeline. With the AIM pipeline passing by a nuclear power plant and the Atlantic Bridge passing a working quarry, too much is at stake to rely on a potentially tainted analysis for approval of the pipeline.

Therefore, I urge you to demand that FERC issue a Stop Work Order until outstanding questions about NRG’s conflicts of interest are resolved, and another, genuinely independent EIS, or analysis, has been completed.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Dear Senators Warren and Markey,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. Therefore I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. We have to be bold and act fast.

Thank you for calling on the nation’s top energy regulator to redo its environmental review of a proposed natural gas pipeline project after reports of possible conflicts of interest surfaced:

I was pleased to learn of your letter to Norman Bay, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, noting that a third-party contractor FERC hired to vet Spectra Energy’s Atlantic Bridge project had already been working for the developer on a separate project.

Thank you for your vigilance in pointing to a post in the green website “DeSmog Blog,” which claimed a third-party contractor, Natural Resources Group, was hired to vet the Atlantic Bridge project. According to the blog, NRG was also contracting on the PennEast project — which Spectra partially owns — that would stretch from northeastern Pennsylvania into New Jersey.

I am delighted by your call on FERC to redo the environmental assessment it released earlier this year on the Atlantic Bridge gas project. FERC found the pipeline expansion proposal would have no “significant impact” on the environment.

You both rightly said that the relationship appears to constitute a conflict of interest according to FERC’s standards. Commission rules bar contractors from having an ongoing relationship with applicants or financial or other interests in the outcome of a commission decision.

Thank you, keep up the good work!

We’ll walk along the route of Spectra’s proposed Access Northeast pipeline and past the proposed Weymouth compressor station. We’ll stand with our allies at Resist the Pipeline to stop construction in West Roxbury. And then we’ll march to the State House itself. Together, we’ll remind Governor Baker and our legislators that if they don’t do what’s necessary to stop climate change, we will.

Thanks for all you do. Onward!

Stop All NEW Pipelines

Elected Officials are listening to you. And they are busy with big things, so we need a strong call to action before summer:  Reach out to ONE Massachusetts friend outside your zip code this week and get her/him to join you in action.

That’s why, right after your Monday Action we’re including an additional kit for you to forward to your friends. Roll up your sleeves, we won’t get this chance again very soon to impact our energy future so deeply. Policies now under discussion can change our course, or tie a fossil fuel stone very firmly around our necks with policies that will impact us into 2050 and beyond.
——————————-
Today’s Monday Action: Urge Senator Markey to:
Block New Pipeline Infrastructure.

Remember, if you have time: Calls and letters count more. But your voices -including emails- are multiplying every week! Well done, you are empowering legislators to do the right thing. Nice lobbying, you.
————————————————–
Dear Senator Markey,

I want to see us get 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. Renewables are ready, and so are we. We owe it to our children and future generations to do everything we can to avoid the worst impacts of global warming. That’s why I oppose building new gas pipelines in Massachusetts. These pipelines would harm local communities and natural landscapes, and keep us hooked on fossil fuels for decades to come. In this, I know we have an ally in you.

I am concerned that pipeline companies hold too much power. “Suspending” the NED pipeline is different than withdrawing it. I am also contacting the MA legislature who are now working on the Energy Omnibus Bill due before summer break, to insist that rate payers are not charged for any new pipeline infrastructure: I am concerned that it’s looking like the Omnibus Bill is going to include a pipeline “tax”. That would bring the pipelines roaring back.

We are counting on you as part of the MA Congressional delegation to pressure Kinder Morgan to drop the MA loop from the CT Expansion (which still has CT and NY pieces that don’t go through protected land). Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. The children thank you.

This Link from the State is a huge help when inviting friends in other zip codes to do Actions:

CONTACT YOUR STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS NOW: Tell them something personal so they know you are real (like you live near a gas leak- look them up here. Or maybe this is your first time writing/calling…) The following 3-point list comes from an impressive coalition that includes: The Conservation Law Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, Mass Energy Alliance, and Environmental League of Massachusetts.

Call Gov. Baker, your State Representative and State Senator and tell them you want:
Two thousand megawatts of offshore wind (or NY will grab it from us- it’s federal waters off our shores and NY needs the power)
Increase Renewable Portfolio Standard to 2% a year. (this means that we’ll get local green jobs twice as fast as now, and it means the industry can count on investing in twice as much infrastructure -because it is currently at 1% growth)
Need environmental standards for massive transmission project (Gov. Baker is pushing big hydro and that means tearing up our landscape to bring power from Canada)

DEAL BREAKER: You must VETO/VOTE AGAINST the omnibus bill altogether if it includes any kind of pipeline tax.

Well done! Thanks for all you do.

Senator Warren, Please Watch the Dogs at FERC

Today’s Monday Action:  Urge Warren to Watchdog FERC
————————————————–
Dear Senator,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. Natural gas is 85% methane, which has 80 times the heat-trapping effect of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere, meaning small amounts can have a significant impact on global warming. We watch with great approval as you fight tirelessly for our rights with agencies such as the SEC and with Leonard Chanin at the Banking Hearing on Consumer Finance Regulations. We need you to turn your laser beam focus on FERC:

Here in Massachusetts, citizens are concerned about the threat to our environment posed by unnecessary and unwanted pipelines; we are also concerned by the power FERC has to overrule the will of the people. We therefore urgently ask that you call for an evidentiary hearing at FERC, with an administrative law judge, on the fundamental question of whether the NED pipeline is needed. Congressman McGovern has made this request on the FERC docket, CP16-21, as have multiple organizations and municipalities.

FERC’s current modus operandi is leading to the overbuild of natural gas infrastructure, to the detriment of communities and the climate. This 400-mile, five-state project needs a more rigorous review on the threshold question of need before more time and money is invested on siting and environmental reviews.

Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. All the children thank you.
