State Reps, Support the Clean Energy Economy

Monday Action for the week of 3/20/17:

This week, we’re asking you to call your Massachusetts State Representative and urge him or her to cosponsor the 2017 Energy Jobs Bill (HD1948).

If your Rep is Solomon Goldstein-Rose, the bill’s author and sponsor, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find one person in a distant district to call their own Rep to co-sponsor. Then call Solomon to thank him for championing bold climate legislation and let him know which Rep your surrogate is calling. This is how we, as constituents of a climate hero, can really make a difference.

You can use the sample talking points or copy-and-paste text below, if you like. Calling shows you really mean it, but if you email, be sure to personalize it. Find your state representative’s contact information here.

Dear [Your State Rep],

I am urgently concerned about climate change. My [children, grandchildren, niece, nephew, friend’s children] depend on us to swiftly, justly and completely transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. That’s why I’m asking you to co-sponsor HD1948 the Energy Jobs Bill introduced by Representative Solomon Goldstein-Rose.

Fossil fuels benefit from many hidden costs which are “externalized,” artificially suppressing the at-the-pump price to consumers and giving dirty fuel an edge in the marketplace. These hidden costs leave our state to pick up the tab to repair the environmental devastation fossil fuels cause. Costs shift to families through pollution’s negative health effects. Jobs and revenue are lost in this raw deal.

The 2017 Energy Jobs Bill (HD1948):

  • Keeps money in-state through carbon pricing on fossil fuels. Collected revenue will be placed in the Clean Energy Dividend Fund, and distributed to MA residents on a monthly basis.
  • Eliminates unnecessary regulations that impede clean energy deployment, creating jobs in a thriving industry.
  • Provides capital for clean energy projects in Massachusetts.
  • Invests in technology innovation and development, especially energy storage.

Communities that have instituted carbon pricing have found it benefits the local economy and it has bi-partisan appeal.

Please support HD1948 for the sake of all children.

Thank you,
With Mothers Out Front

Price Carbon, Governor

12/12/16 Monday Action: Tell Governor Baker we want a Carbon Fee and Rebate! A comment page is open NOW to influence the regulations that are about to be recommended by the administration. Use the text below as a guide.
Dear Governor,

I am urgently concerned about climate change.  I know you are, too, and appreciate the work you and your staff are doing to fight it. However, we need to do more, including enlisting the help of everyone in our state.

To enlist everyone’s help, we need to put a price on carbon pollution. Conservative and liberal economists agree that this is the most effective way to fight climate change and to build a stronger economy at the same time. Burning fossil fuels has buried costs that aren’t captured in their price, such as health problems and sea level rise, among others.

A similar program has already been successful in British Columbia, Canada.  Fossil fuel use is down and the economy has improved through their carbon fee and rebate program.

Massachusetts has always been a leader, taking essential bold new steps for the betterment of our society.  It’s time to do so again.  Please enact a fair carbon pricing fee and rebate program to fight climate change, accelerate the switch to renewable energy, benefit low-income people who are most vulnerable, create more jobs and attract clean energy investment.

We must protect our most vulnerable citizens and future generations. Please be bold! Introduce legislation and use your executive powers to make carbon pollution pricing a reality, so that everyone is motivated to cut fossil fuel use and move us toward a sustainable, renewable energy economy.

Future generations will thank you, including the children you love.

Stop All NEW Pipelines

Elected Officials are listening to you. And they are busy with big things, so we need a strong call to action before summer:  Reach out to ONE Massachusetts friend outside your zip code this week and get her/him to join you in action.

That’s why, right after your Monday Action we’re including an additional kit for you to forward to your friends. Roll up your sleeves, we won’t get this chance again very soon to impact our energy future so deeply. Policies now under discussion can change our course, or tie a fossil fuel stone very firmly around our necks with policies that will impact us into 2050 and beyond.
Today’s Monday Action: Urge Senator Markey to:
Block New Pipeline Infrastructure.

Remember, if you have time: Calls and letters count more. But your voices -including emails- are multiplying every week! Well done, you are empowering legislators to do the right thing. Nice lobbying, you.
Dear Senator Markey,

I want to see us get 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. Renewables are ready, and so are we. We owe it to our children and future generations to do everything we can to avoid the worst impacts of global warming. That’s why I oppose building new gas pipelines in Massachusetts. These pipelines would harm local communities and natural landscapes, and keep us hooked on fossil fuels for decades to come. In this, I know we have an ally in you.

I am concerned that pipeline companies hold too much power. “Suspending” the NED pipeline is different than withdrawing it. I am also contacting the MA legislature who are now working on the Energy Omnibus Bill due before summer break, to insist that rate payers are not charged for any new pipeline infrastructure: I am concerned that it’s looking like the Omnibus Bill is going to include a pipeline “tax”. That would bring the pipelines roaring back.

We are counting on you as part of the MA Congressional delegation to pressure Kinder Morgan to drop the MA loop from the CT Expansion (which still has CT and NY pieces that don’t go through protected land). Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. The children thank you.

Senator Ed Markey

Share this kit with a friend. You can even do it together.

This Link from the State is a huge help when inviting friends in other zip codes to do Actions:

CONTACT YOUR STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS NOW: Tell them something personal so they know you are real (like you live near a gas leak- look them up here. Or maybe this is your first time writing/calling…) The following 3-point list comes from an impressive coalition that includes: The Conservation Law Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, Mass Energy Alliance, and Environmental League of Massachusetts.

Call Gov. Baker, your State Representative and State Senator and tell them you want:
Two thousand megawatts of offshore wind (or NY will grab it from us- it’s federal waters off our shores and NY needs the power)
Increase Renewable Portfolio Standard to 2% a year. (this means that we’ll get local green jobs twice as fast as now, and it means the industry can count on investing in twice as much infrastructure -because it is currently at 1% growth)
Need environmental standards for massive transmission project (Gov. Baker is pushing big hydro and that means tearing up our landscape to bring power from Canada)

DEAL BREAKER: You must VETO/VOTE AGAINST the omnibus bill altogether if it includes any kind of pipeline tax.

Well done! Thanks for all you do.
