Monday Action: Tell DPU No New Gas

Here’s your Monday Action for the week of 2/12/18.

Feeling hopeless? Here’s the antidote:
Just do one simple thing. Make this call. Then make it a habit and do it with friends. It’s pleasing and effective to start your week this way. Thanks for speaking up.

MOF supporters have written a comment to the DPU about Columbia Gas and Berkshire Gas contracts that we don’t need and don’t want. Add your name to the list of supporters.

See more information from Climate Action Now and ideas for sending your own comment, here.

If you’re in Western Mass, contact your state Rep and Senator to let them know you want the DPU to hold a hearing on this out here, not just in Boston. Stan has already made that request, so we’re thanking him and giving him more calls so he can say how many constituents have asked for a hearing in Northampton. Find your state Representative and your own state Senator here.

Stan Rosenberg serves this district –see this map.
State Senator Stan Rosenberg
 (617) 722-1500
Letter: State House Office, 24 Beacon Street,Room 332, Boston, MA 02133

Dear Senator Rosenberg [or Representative _____],

I am urgently concerned about climate change because I am a [mother, father, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend of children]. I oppose any Columbia Gas pipeline expansion in the Pioneer Valley or Berkshire Gas 20-year contracts for increased gas supply.

Thank you for urging the MA Department of Public Utilities to schedule a hearing in Northampton on D.P.U 17-172 and 17-145. Please count me in when you tell the DPU how many of your constituents want to comment in person. I want them to know that I’m working to aggressively reduce my community’s dependence on natural gas so we do not need new gas infrastructure or supply. We definitely will not foot the bill.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter. Future generations very urgently depend on you to lead on climate issues.

With Mothers Out Front, Mobilizing for a Livable Climate (and I VOTE).

You did your Monday Action, well done!

Thanks for checking in each week and doing what you can to leave a healthy climate for the coming generations.
You are our inspiration.

6-Call Mandate to Stop the Pipeline!

We are stopping the pipeline: We’ve heard MA State Representative Ellen Story say: “Six Calls from My Constituents is a Mandate.”

Just. Six. Calls.

When a handful of us activate our little networks, that’s a lot of power. Together, we can find people in every town in Massachusetts to say “no” to new pipelines. This weekend’s test-run, called Light Up the Map! showed 15 people knew pipeline opponents in 116 towns: So think about it, when 50 of us activate our personal networks, that is enough for a state-wide mandate to stop the pipelines.

Today’s email therefore is a kit for you to forward to your friends. Roll up your sleeves for this 7-fer and also share with your friends in other MA towns! Let’s blow the lid off the fiction that natural gas is a “bridge” fuel.
Today’s Mega Monday Action: Urge all seven of your representatives to:
Block New Pipeline Infrastructure.

SPECIAL HELP TODAY, courtesy of Environment Massachusetts! Thank you Ben! Use this online petition:
It directs to your personal state senators, state representatives and the Governor.

But note this: Calls and letters count more. If you are short on time, certainly use the above petition.
Dear Governor Baker,

I want to see Massachusetts get 100 percent of its energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We owe it to our children and future generations to do everything we can to avoid the worst impacts of global warming.

That’s why I oppose building new gas pipelines in Massachusetts. These pipelines will harm local communities and natural landscapes, and keep us hooked on fossil fuels for decades to come.

We don’t need fossil fuels to power our lives. We can meet 100 percent of our needs with our abundant renewable energy resources. Why do we have yet to see a study of the gas companies’ need including all realistic alternatives? Please get us one, as the study the Attorney General, Maura Healy, initiated only covered the utilities’ needs, and concluded definitively that we do not need the pipelines.

Please support efforts to prohibit spending public money on new gas pipelines, and please do everything in your power to prevent the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure.

Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. The children thank you.

Week 24: President Obama’s Daughter Has Asthma

President Obama recently linked his daughter Malia’s asthma to climate change. He still has a chance to be our climate hero (see Bill McKibben’s 6/11/15 open letter) Let’s thank Obama for connecting climate change to children’s health and tell him this is why we oppose the TPP:

MONDAY ACTION: Week 24 in Countdown to UN Climate Talks in Paris
Dear Mr. President,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore I urge you to be bold in fighting for real solutions to stop climate change. Be our climate hero, there is still time!

Thank you for speaking out in April about the connection between climate change and our children’s health: To stop climate change we have to keep fossil fuels in the ground. I don’t understand how you could support the TPP when this Trans-Pacific Partnership would let fossil fuel companies sue governments to dig them up. I oppose the TPP.

Please direct your Paris delegates to be bold on our behalf this December at the UN Climate Talks. I am part of a growing movement united in our desire to halt climate change. Your boldness is crucial to our collective future.

I exercise my right to vote.

Thank you for being the change you want to see!
Wait, you’re still here?
So that took you less than 5 minutes? You want more?

Did you know: Senator Markey’s aide told us that they tally only issues and addresses and pass that spreadsheet on to the Senator once a week. MA State Representative Peter Kocut says “6 calls from my constituents on one issue represents a mandate.”

So please never be afraid to cut and paste, call, or pour your heart out in email or letters and share your solutions. Your voice gets counted the same in each case.

Action Week 28: Senator Markey, Please Weigh In

Thank you very much for your vote against the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP last week. I would like to know what your #1 concern is about TPP! For instance, are you concerned, like I am, about the complete destruction of our constitutional integrity and the potential damages to our state’s natural resources if TPP were passed?

Thank you also for your April 22 Earth Day email: It’s time to stem the tide on Climate Change. I missed seeing “Natural Gas” as one of the trouble industries you called out…

Here in the Commonwealth we are feeling the threat of the Natural Gas industry through the proposed pipeline. There are many similarities with the XL Keystone which you have so staunchly opposed. Please assure me that you will continue to fight this industry also. Thank you for all you do.

We need you to be bold and visionary in fighting this threat to the common good.

Thank you for all you do!
You are part of a rapidly expanding movement in a race to save today’s children’s futures. Do you know about Climate Action Now yet? Here’s the most recent weekly newsletter.

P.S.  Reports from relate that a trade agreement such as “the TPP would eliminate environmental reviews of fracked liquid natural gas export facilities, which could be used to move half of the gas drilled in the US overseas. These massive, multibillion dollar fossil fuel projects would make fracking companies a fortune — and be completely exempt from federal environmental review.” This must be prevented. Here is‘s petition to Congress for you.

Sincerely yours,

How about this:

–I demand more support for renewable energy sources and bolder energy efficiency measures. I oppose new fossil fuel infrastructure such as the proposed Keystone and Kinder-Morgan pipelines. Natural gas is not acceptable as a transition fuel. Reports released every week about man-made disasters (like this week’s earthquakes in Oklahoma caused by fracking) are very alarming to me.

–I have switched my household electricity to renewable energy through the non-profit MassEnergy, which provides locally sourced, renewable energy to New England households.

–Thank you for coming out so strongly against the TPP. Such a trade agreement poses a disastrous threat to our climate. Therefore I just signed your petition to our trade officials to vote NO on fast-tracking trade until the TPP agreement is made public.

Curious about switching
your electricity to clean green without changing your provider or cutting down a single tree? Renters can too! Get in touch with your Pioneer Valley Community Organizing Team COT! We’ve all switched and are happy to share our experiences.

Action Week 32: Tell Obama NO Fast Track

Happy Monday Action.

Today we are knocking on President Obama’s door again as part of our five, 8-week cycles to Paris. This is for a total of 40 weeks of Actions. So this is the first action of the second “round” as it were. If you are just joining us – Welcome! There are more of us come knocking every cycle…

Here’s a sample text for your 5-minute Action this time:
Dear Mr. President,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. We deserve a fossil fuel free future for our energy needs.

I therefore urge you to direct your Paris delegates to be bold on our behalf this November at the UN Climate Talks.

As a member of Mothers Out Front, I am part of a growing movement united in our desire for vibrant and rich future for future generations. Thank you for doing your part to make it so.

Meet two Community Organizing Team (COT) members, Madeleine Charney and Karen Ribeiro:
Madeleine is your COT House Party Coordinator, and here is her note to President Obama:

Dear Mr. President,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. We deserve a fossil fuel free future for our energy needs. Your administration recently announced the US targets for emissions cuts, sent to the UN for the Paris 2015 COP meetings of 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025.

I say that is not bold enough. Ask us to conserve energy as if we were in the fight of our lives, and you could get that number in a month.

You haven’t asked us to! Ask us!

Madeleine Charney
Of Mothers Out Front, and mother to Eli, age 7.

Karen is your COT Coordinator. Here’s her letter:

Dear President Obama,
I am urgently concerned about climate change and want you to boldly convey the need for a FOSSIL FUEL FREE future — a goal ardently championed by Mothers Out Front — to our United Nations delegates for the climate talks in Paris.

What wakes me up at 3 am in a cold sweat is the “fast track secretive trade pact” Trans Pacific Partnership, known widely as “NAFTA on steroids.” The North American Free Trade Agreement has legitimized the closure of successful renewable energy manufacturers and has continued to benefit fossil fuel monstrosities. Please do NOT use your Special Authority for such madness. We must stop funding and supporting our demise!

Thank you for your leadership in extending wind Production Tax Credits and solar Investment Tax Credits to continue the growth of truly renewable energy sources (not natural gas!). I support your Clean Power Plan and look for even bolder proposals from our United States leaders.
