Pres Obama, Cool it on the Coolants

Monday Action for the week of 8/1/16: Urge Obama to push for an aggressive phase-down of the less well known greenhouse gases, HFCs.

Dear President Obama,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. Therefore I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. There are also other gases dangerously warming the planet.

We know that the coolants now used in aerosols, air-conditioners and refrigerators are better for the ozone, but still dangerous: these hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, are becoming more of a threat to planetary warming. Currently, the contribution of HFCs to greenhouse warming is 1% of that of CO2, but by 2050, if we follow the “business as usual” path, that contribution is likely to increase to 10% of that of CO2.

Luckily, reducing HFCs offers a huge benefit for little comparative cost. Please continue to push for more aggressive world-wide phase-down. We can and must be as successful as we were with CFCs that threatened to grow the now healed ozone hole. We must freeze the global growth of HFCs by 2021 at the latest, and rapidly make the transition to more sustainable alternatives such as ammonia.

President Obama, it’s urgent that you push as hard as you can. We need you. Your girls need you. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Still here?

We have another concern you could share with the President if you want:
“I also strongly disagree with your assistant secretary of energy for fossil fuels, Chris Smith, who has said that you don’t want to Keep It In The Ground. Please stop listening to the fossil fuel lobby. Keep It In The Ground we must, and we shall. We must break free from fossil fuels today: Where are our US-made hydrogen cars powered by renewable energy? Toyota and Hyundai can do it- so can we!”

Breaking News:

The Massachussetts Omnibus Energy bill passed the MA House and Senate last night in the final hour of the month, without much discussion. The most exciting part of the bill is that it adds 1600 megawatts of off-shore wind power which is the biggest procurement for wind in any state. We’re also pleased with the inclusion of some new regulations of gas leaks we asked for. Unfortunately the bill didn’t include the pipeline tax ban or any solar. So we’ll be back next session pushing for more of what we need from our state legislators. Meanwhile Governor Baker will get this bill.

An Energy Bill for All Children’s Future

Today’s Monday Action: Representative Dempsey, the Next Generation is Depending on You to Make the MA Energy Bill the Strongest Possible.

State_House.JPGThe omnibus Energy Bill has been through the House, the Senate, and will be completed in conference committee at the State House THIS WEEK, before the August recess begins. This bill will set critical parts of our state’s energy policy for the near future. For the sake of all children, we are pushing for the most visionary bill that is politically possible.

Mothers Out Front is part of a coordinated effort by the Mass Power Forward coalition to CALL the House conference committee members. We’re focusing your attention on Representative Brian Dempsey of Haverhill. Please take some time now to think about who you know in Haverhill, or near Haverhill (they might know someone in Haverhill!). It makes an impact for conferees to hear from any state resident, but for a big impact, they need to hear from their own constituents.

If you have never called before, now is the time to gather all your courage and do it. It’s fast, you can read straight from the script below, and an aide will take the message.

PLEASE MAKE A CALL if you can. We’re all going to do it together! If you’re not able to, you can copy and paste some of the text below into your own email.

Script:

My name is _________ and I’m calling to leave a message for Representative Dempsey about the energy bill (at that point the person answering the phone might transfer you to the aide handling energy issues. Then you can begin again) My name is _________, I’m a [mother, father, grandparent, aunt,…] and I’m urgently concerned about climate change. We need to make a rapid transition to clean energy for the sake of all children.  I’m calling to urge Chair Dempsey to make this happen by including the following 3 provisions in the final energy bill:

*first, an increase in the RPS to 2% (The Renewal Portfolio Standard is the amount of renewal energy the utilities are required to purchase).

*second, an investment in wind energy in the amount of 2,000 Megawatts

*and third, a prohibition against charging electric customers  for gas pipelines

Please give him my message.
Thank you.

MA House: Make it Law, No Pipeline Tax

The omnibus energy bill is expected out of the House Ways and Means committee TODAY, Monday, and there is a very short window for amendments to be filed before the full bill goes for a vote on Wednesday.

Today’s Action: Ask your State Representative to support an amendment that clearly prohibits electric ratepayer funding of gas infrastructure (a definitive ban of the “pipeline tax“).

Light Up The Map: If your rep, like Ellen Story, is already committed to forbidding a pipeline tax, tell her instead that you’re enlisting the help of your friends across the state. The omnibus energy bill comes at a critical time for the planet and you are the ones who can bring it by lighting up your networks: Ask at least one person to do today’s Monday Action: For phone numbers for this urgent action use This Link from the State

To help you think of friends in MA towns, see below the Special List of Legislators to target.

Calls are critical today. But if that’s a no go for you, then cut and paste the suggested letter below and email it to your State Representative and to one person in another part of the state.

Dear State Legislator,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. I want to see Massachusetts get 100% of its energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind.

I therefore need the new omnibus energy bill to prohibit public or electric ratepayer financing of new natural gas infrastructure.

We also need:
At least two thousand megawatts of offshore wind (or NY will grab it from us- it’s federal waters off our shores and NY needs the power. 2K MW is enough for infrastructure to be built in MA. That means jobs!).
Increase Renewable Portfolio Standard to 2% a year.(this means that we’ll get local green jobs twice as fast as now, and it means the industry can count on investing in twice as much infrastructure -because it is currently at 1% growth).
Environmental standards for massive transmission projects (Gov. Baker is pushing big hydro and that means tearing up our landscape to bring power from Canada).

Thank you for fighting for us and our environment. The children thank you.

Sincerely,

All I Asked for Mothers Day…

Mothers Day was originally a day of war protest by mothers trying to save their sons. That’s all we want now. A healthy, livable future for children everywhere. We have a chance to shape the biggest energy bill in Massachusetts this decade, which will shape the energy landscape of tomorrow.

Today’s Monday Action:
MA Senator, these unrepaired gas leaks could explode unless we get a great Energy Omnibus Bill.

Please note: Calls and letters really count more on the state level
. So if you can today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Find the gas leak that matters most to you on this HEET leaks map. Click on the marker to see the address and use it in the talking points below where it saysTHESE LEAKS. Or copy and paste and mention the address of “your” gas leak in your email.

It’s really important that you bring this home to legislators all across the state by asking a friend in another zip code to do what you just did! You or your friend can enter a Town and State and look up State Senators and State Representatives HERE: http://openstates.org/

Remember our state legislators tell us over and over:  Six Calls From My Constituents is a Mandate.
————————————————–
Dear Senator Rosenberg,

I am very concerned about climate change. Thank you very much for your leadership opposing the pipeline tax and supporting renewables, conservation and energy efficiency. I know you and other legislators are working on a very important, energy ominbus bill before you leave for June recess. Please make sure the bill will:

1. Halt the building or expanding of natural gas infrastructure.
Instead of making consumers pay for new pipelines, make the gas companies pay to fix THESE LEAKS in the old ones.
2. Expand programs for conservation and energy efficiency.
MA leads the nation in energy efficiency, but THESE LEAKS are creating as much climate warming emissions as we’ve saved with all the energy efficiency programs so far.
3. Speed our complete and rapid transition to renewable energy.
The cost to our children’s health and the actual cost to ratepayers of THESE LEAKS (almost a billion dollars each year just in the Boston area) cannot continue. We need to build the renewable energy infrastructure NOW.

Tell the utilities and pipeline companies: You don’t get more when you can’t fix what you have.

Thank you for protecting us and future generations.
Sincerely,
