Berkshire Gas, We Want Less Gas!

2016-02-15-greenfield-berkshire-gas-march-bridge-to-nowhere

Monday Action for the week of 4/17/17.

Last week FERC granted Kinder Morgan permission to start tree felling in Otis State Forest. They may not start today, but they will try to start soon. There are still ways to stop them, so we haven’t lost heart. [Speaking of heart, please join us in giving a hearty Stop the Pipeline welcome to the MA Secretary of Energy and Environment, in Shelburne Falls on Wednesday morning. See our special plan below or click here.]

So Climate Heroes, we may not have stopped the interstate pipeline from going through Otis yet, but there’s one very close to many of us that Western Mass reps can help with. If you don’t live in the Berkshire Gas service region, please forward this to a friend who does and help them make the call.

If you live in a community affected by the Berkshire Gas moratorium (towns from Amherst to Greenfield, and Whately) please call Senator Rosenberg and your State Representative urging that they support Montague and Deerfield’s action plan to end the moratorium without big new infrastructure!

You can use the text below as talking points when you call or copy-and-paste if you choose to email. Personalizing your message makes it count a lot more.

Dear [Senator Rosenberg or Representative NAME],

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground – including natural gas.

Berkshire Gas has proposed a solution to the moratorium on new hookups which they imposed on our town. Their solution would flood the valley with double the amount of gas currently used, building new, expensive infrastructure.

I hope you have seen the Action Plan to end the Berkshire Gas moratorium that Montague and Deerfield sent you last week. I urge you to fully support their recommendations which come from two expert witnesses. They show that a combination of system adjustments, demand management, more energy efficiency, and modest improvements to Berkshire’s infrastructure could end the moratorium quickly.

I urge you NOT to compromise with any Berkshire Gas proposal that would send more gas into our town than we need for local economic development as we transition to an economy powered by conservation and 100% renewable energy.

Thank you for serving our community and especially for your work on behalf of all our children and grandchildren whose future will depend on taking immediate action to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Sincerely,

Governor, Protect Our Water!

10515261293_cf99b54108_bHere is your Monday Action for the week of 3/27/17:

Governor Baker has the ability to protect the water, the land, and the sacred places in Otis State Forest.

The new Kinder Morgan/Tennessee gas pipeline through Otis State Forest is poised to begin construction. There’s not much time, but we can play a part.

Ask the Governor to deny the 401 Water Quality Certification to stop the Connecticut Expansion Project.
You can use the sample talking points or copy-and-paste text below, if you like. Calling shows you really mean it, but if you email, be sure to personalize it. Contact information is below.

Dear Governor Baker,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I urge you to be bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.

You can stop the Connecticut Expansion Project by simply denying the 401 Water Quality Certification. This project is not yet under construction. The pipeline will significantly disrupt conservation land that the Massachusetts Constitution protects forever. The water of beautiful Spectacle Pond will be used to clean toxins out of the pipeline and will then be dumped downstream.

The fracked-gas to be carried in this pipeline will not even serve MA residents. The methane released by gas is a major Greenhouse Gas threatening our climate and our children’s future.

New York’s Governor Cuomo shut down the Constitution pipeline because it did not pass the 401 Water Quality Certification standards.

Protect our water, Governor!

This is something you can do and become a climate hero to all our children and grandchildren.

Sincerely,

Defend Us, People’s Lawyer

Monday Action for the week of 2/6/17: Urge the Attorney General to prevent Kinder Morgan from cutting trees in our protected lands.

We can stop pipelines right in our own backyard. We did it before with NED and we’ll do it again.

Mothers Out Front opposes all new fossil fuel infrastructure because only clean energy infrastructure can create the livable future we want for all children everywhere.

Those of you who’ve been following Monday Actions and the news from Sandisfield, MA know that a part of the beautiful Otis State Forest is on the verge of being taken by Kinder Morgan for their Connecticut Expansion Pipeline project.

There are still legal and procedural ways our allies are fighting for Otis, including ongoing appeals concerning a federally required water quality certification from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. So our Attorney General Healey can still fight the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to stop Kinder Morgan from cutting the trees that our state constitution’s Article 97 protects.

Please call AG Maura Healey’s office and use the ideas in the text below to express your concern. If you’re not in the habit of calling yet, try writing a postcard. If you email, change the text, make it personal, say what motivates you to act on climate change.

Dear Attorney General Healey,

Because I am alarmed that climate change threatens the health and future of our children, I am grateful to you for standing up to Exxon Mobil. You are fighting, and so far winning, with such courage, to show that Exxon knew their actions were causing climate change and they hid the evidence.

We need the same fight from you right here in the Commonwealth. I want you to hold Kinder Morgan/Tennessee Gas to the same standards.  We rely on you to uphold our right to clean air and clean water, and the protections of our environment under Article 97 of our state constitution.
A lot of us asked your office to appeal the Berkshire Superior Court decision that the Federal Natural Gas Act preempted our state constitution. We wish you had fought Kinder Morgan’s Connecticut Expansion pipeline project all the way to the Supreme Court. But there is still something you can do.
Now, Kinder Morgan has renewed its request for permission to cut trees in Otis State Forest.  We need you to tell FERC that Kinder Morgan cannot cut trees in our state forest when Massachusetts is in the middle of conducting a review of whether a permit in Sandisfield will really protect our wetlands and water ways.

Please challenge FERC’s authority to take actions that could damage our natural resources when numerous matters relating to this proposed pipeline are still being challenged. If there was ever a time to assert our state’s rights, it is NOW.

Thank you,

Massachusetts Threatened

10515261293_cf99b54108_b
Spectacle Pond in Otis State Forest

1/2/17: In honor of the children of the world and YOUR work for a clean energy future, the Pioneer Valley team of Mothers Out Front presents this first Monday Action of the New Year:

Today, please call Governor Baker at 617-725-4005 or 888-870-7770 and leave a message. It will take 5 minutes or less! For brevity use the bold text.

I’m calling, Governor Baker, to ask you to strengthen our environmental agencies and protect the Commonwealth and future generations from unneeded and damaging gas pipelines.

You often state that pipelines are a “federal matter,” as if Massachusetts can do nothing. There’s many ways you could direct state agencies to take a stand. Yet you recently issued $98 million in budget cuts that “disproportionately devastate agencies protecting our environment and public health” (as noted by the Environmental League of Massachusetts).

I’m alarmed to learn that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would sacrifice public conservation land in Otis State Forest for a gas pipeline. Your Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) has entered into a settlement with Kinder Morgan, rather than stand up for our constitution which safeguards our conservation land in Article 97. Your agencies did not even follow their own no-net-loss Article 97 land disposition policy. Now Upton State Forest is threatened by Spectra’s planned pipeline in the same way.  Please change course!

You could have directed your Department of Environmental Protection, or DEP, to more rigorously apply the state’s water quality standards and deny the 401 for the Kinder Morgan project. And, regarding the Spectra’s compressor station slated for Weymouth, your DEP issued a superseding order, seeking to undermine local control by overriding the local conservation commission’s wetlands permitting decision. We need better.

As a father, as a fervent public servant who has dedicated his life to service, we need you to stand up to the pipeline companies, and help move us towards a sustainable energy future.

Governor, I thank you in advance for your actions to protect, defend and uphold our State constitution.

New fossil fuel infrastructure is not for the Common Good: We all must be urgently concerned about climate change, as future children are depending on us to leave them a livable world. We have a narrow window, but it can still be done if we can move to 100% renewables by 2030. Thank you for doing your part.

Sincerely,

A Win For AG Healey!

Monday Action for the week of 12/19/16 – Thank Attorney General Maura Healey for standing up to Exxon and upholding our State constitution.

Remember, if you have time: Calls and letters count more.

Dear Attorney General Maura Healey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind, and become the energy efficiency model for the world.

I want to thank you for standing up to Exxon and to congratulate you for the good news that Texas federal district judge Ed Kinkeade cancelled the deposition he had scheduled for you, regarding your Office’s courageous investigation of ExxonMobil.

Mothers Out Front celebrates this victory for your investigation, for Massachusetts law, for corporate accountability, and for our growing power to protect our children. Bravo!

We admire your work and are inspired by the study you initiated which concluded the following: Increased Gas Capacity Not Needed to Meet State’s Electric Reliability Needs.

You are indeed the People’s Lawyer, and we people need you to defend our Massachusetts constitution and Article 97 which states that we shall have the right to clean air and water, freedom from excessive and unnecessary noise, and the natural, scenic, historic, and aesthetic qualities of our environment. A court ruling threatens to let Kinder Morgan trample all that in Otis State Forest.

In the name of the children, thank you for upholding our MA constitution and may your season be bright.

Today’s Monday Action: Urge Attorney General Maura Healey to Protect Us From Kinder Morgan Pipeline Land-Grab.

————————————————–
Dear Attorney General Maura Healey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. I need to see us get 100% of energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind, and become the energy efficiency model for the world.

Thank you for talking with MOF in person last week. We admire your work and are inspired by the study you initiated which concluded the following: Increased Gas Capacity Not Needed to Meet State’s Electric Reliability Needs.

You are the People’s Lawyer, and we people need you to defend our Massachusetts constitution and Article 97which states that we shall have the right to clean air and water, freedom from excessive and unnecessary noise, and the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic qualities of our environment. A recent court ruling threatens to let Kinder Morgan trample all that:

I am concerned that our state and our constitution be bashed by greedy corporations. One of the biggest conservation land deals in Massachusetts history, 3,800 acre Otis State Forest is a great example of a MA state treasure, with its 400-yr old hemlocks and pristine 62 acre Spectacle Pond. The people who worked hard to raise the 5.2 million dollars to preserve it in 2007, and generations of citizens who are meant to benefit from this gift are more important than a multi-national company looking to make a buck.

Therefore we urgently need you to appeal the CT Expansion case ruling.

Share this kit with a friend. You can even do it together.

This Link from the State is a huge help when inviting friends in other zip codes to do Actions:

CONTACT YOUR THREE STATE REPRESENTATIVES NOW: Tell them something personal so they know you are real (like you live near a gas leak- look them up here. Or maybe this is your first time writing/calling…) The following 3-point list comes from an impressive coalition that includes:the Conservation Law Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, Mass Energy Alliance, and Environmental League of Massachusetts.

Call Gov. Baker, your State Representative and State Senator and tell them you want:
Two thousand megawatts of offshore wind (or NY will grab it from us- it’s federal waters off our shores and NY needs the power)
Increase Renewable Portfolio Standard to 2% a year.(this means that we’ll get local green jobs twice as fast as now, and it means the industry can count on investing in twice as much infrastructure -because it is currently at 1% growth)
Need environmental standards for massive transmission project (Gov. Baker is pushing big hydro and that means tearing up our landscape to bring power from Canada)

DEAL BREAKER: You must VETO/VOTE AGAINST the omnibus bill altogether if it includes any kind of pipeline tax.

Well done! Thanks for all you do.
