Gov Baker – Carbon Fee and Dividend Now!

Monday Action for the week of 6/19/17. See below for In Person Events for Pioneer Valley

This week’s Monday Action is directed at Governor Baker at a critical moment for carbon pricing legislation.

Two carbon bills will be considered in a hearing at the State House tomorrow, Tuesday 6/20, from 1pm – 5pm. We’re packing the auditorium with carbon fee and dividend supporters.  Carpool sign up here.

The Governor has declared that Massachusetts will meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. A carbon fee and diviend, enacted this year, would fulfill that promise. There is no other policy that could. We think the Governor should hear that from a LOT of people

Carbon fee and dividend will put us on the path to a swift, just and complete transition away from fossil fuels to a clean energy future. To understand how, watch this 3 minute video with Robert Reich.

Tap the Mama Bear in you. Call Governor Baker’s office and speak with all your heart. Create a loud chorus that shakes the State House by forwarding this action to friends.

Dear Governor Baker,

I’m urgently concerned about climate change. Solutions have to be big, bold, and now! My children {grandchildren, nieces/nephews, me & my friends, friends’ children} are growing up and I refuse to accept anything less than a healthy, livable future. The way to jump start our progress is a carbon fee and dividend policy.

Thank you for throwing our Massachusetts hat into the ring to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

You’ve now made a promise to us and the next generations. We need speedy solutions to meet the spirit of Paris, policies that rock the boat and make business as usual expensive.

Carbon fee and dividend is a fair and fast policy to reduce our reliance on oil and natural gas, which in our state are the contributors to our emissions.

We have momentum in both houses of the legislature on this. This is the pivotal moment when you prove your commitment to Paris: Tell our Senators and Representatives that you will sign a carbon fee and dividend bill that puts money back into the pockets of low and middle income residents and keeps money from fossil fuels in our local communities.

Please do it now. You would be a climate hero if you do.

Sincerely,
YOUR NAME

All I Want For #MothersDay is the #ParisAgreement

ivankawhitehouse_theodore.png

This week’s Monday Action, brought to you a day early for Mothers Day from Pioneer Valley, MA Mothers Out Front: Ask Ivanka to tell her father that All We Want For Mothers Day is the Paris Agreement.

Two years ago we began Monday Actions as a weekly countdown to the Paris Climate talks. Then we celebrated what seemed to be international progress against the threat of climate change after Paris. Now, with a new administration in Washington D.C. we are in danger of pulling out of this critically important agreement.

If the world’s leaders fulfill the commitments made in Paris, our children have a chance at a healthy livable climate tomorrow.

Today, on Mothers Day and all week, we are writing, posting and Tweeting to Ivanka Trump urging her to advise the President to stay the course on the Paris Climate Agreement. Feel free to use the sample letter below or edit it in your own voice!

Dear Ivanka Trump:

As a fellow mother I think that you will understand why I am urgently concerned about climate change. Our children depend on us to do whatever we can to fight for a livable future for them.

The U.S. must remain a strong member of the Paris Climate Agreement in order for other countries to follow and reduce the use of fossil fuels and their emissions. For our children’s sake, we must remain true to the agreement that was made in 2015.

So much depends on U.S. leadership on this critical issue. If we invest in clean, renewable energy we’ll combat climate change and our economy will thrive.

Now is the time to strengthen these agreements so that all children can have a healthy environment today and a livable climate tomorrow.

Thank you for caring and speaking for the children of the world. Be their hero and their hope.

Sincerely,

Governor, Join the Paris Agreement

Monday Action for the week of 12/26/16: Urge Your Governor To Join the Compact of States and Regions to meet or surpass the Paris Climate Agreement.

Call your governor if you can, but no guilt about cutting and pasting. Charlie Baker not you Governor? Find Your Governor’s contact info here.
___________________________________
Dear Governor,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. All future children are depending on us to leave them a livable world. We have a narrow window, but it can still be done if we can Keep It In the Ground.

Towns, states and regions are now the U.S. leaders of the renewable future. I’m proud of Massachusetts’ leadership on combating climate change, but I know there is so much more we can do.

Massachusetts is missing from a very important list: I urge you to be a climate hero by adding Massachusetts to the Compact of States and Regions,  joining our neighbors in NY, CT and VT, plus 60 other sub-national governments.

Members of the Compact commit to ambitious goals that meet or surpass the Paris Agreement for reducing their carbon footprint and they report their policies and data with great transparency. This allows governments to see what works and what doesn’t, and to learn about best practices.

The Compact of States and Regions (current members represent 17% of the global economy) incentivizes states, provinces and regions to report on an annual basis, and is providing sound and solid lessons on how the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement — staying well below a 2 degrees’ Celsius rise and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius — can be met.

Thank you for leading on this. We look forward to hearing about your progress in January!

Sincerely,

200 Nations, Together

paris-one-climate-one-worldwomen-at-standing-rock-small

Monday Action 11/7/16: Remember the Paris Climate Accord a year ago, when the world decided to finally act on climate change? We have good news:
The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we’d dreamed. We are encouraged that our voices are being heard. Today we are back to stop the new pipelines in our own nation, a struggle peacefully led in North Dakota by America’s original Nations:

Today’s Monday Action: Ask Elizabeth Warren (or your Senator) to Shine a Light on injustice at Standing Rock.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Maybe make it personal, mention ages of children dear to you.
___________________________________________________

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground- including natural gas.

The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we had hoped. The USA must do its part to Keep It in the Ground:

Together we will peacefully stop new pipelines: We need you to speak out for the injustices being meted out against the brave protesters at Standing Rock by fossil fuel giants. We need you to sing out that the People’s watchdog, FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, was founded to protect the People, not to fast track new pipelines, as FERC did again 10/28/16 (to pass by the Indian Point nuclear power plant in NY).

Yet FERC is literally in bed with Fossil Fuel companies (see husband and wife team) while pipeline interests set dogs on peaceful protesters and their children. This must stop– please get out your impressive megaphone for a call to action.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Mothers Out Front Says Paris Here We Come!

Homestretch! Just one week left to go to Paris Climate Talks. Some of you have been here for almost 40 weeks: Great work, whether it was one Action or the whole enchilada. Next week we’ll introduce the volunteer team that has been bringing you Monday Actions.

Last week, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy’s report came out, proving conclusively there is no need for new gas pipelines. Today’s Monday Action is a huge thank you to the Attorney General for her courage to shine a light on how unwelcome this costly fossil fuel-driven proposed pipeline is:

Contact the AGO: ago@state.ma.us

Dear Attorney General,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore I thank you for being bold in fighting for real solutions to stop climate change.

Thank you for protecting rate-payers from predatory energy practices pushed by the fossil fuel lobby. While countries gather at the U.N. Climate talks in Paris to agree on global solutions to climate change, I am heartened that you are here with us concerned citizens, on the ground in MA, making sure that we do our part to fight global warming and the injustices that it brings, with all that we have.

In Amherst, bring a 3 sentence “Letter to the Future” by completing the following three prompts. You can share it aloud at the rally if you want and then send it to our leaders in Paris.

For children:
1) The world I want will be…
2) My family is making that world by…
3) I ask the world’s leaders in Paris to…
Adults: imagine writing to a child of the future descended from your family

Mothers Out Front · 30 Bow St, Cambridge, MA 02138, United Stat

We are Paris

We mourn with our sisters and brothers in Paris. Thinking of the innocent lives lost, we hold the children we love closer, wishing we could protect them from every kind of terror, knowing this isn’t possible. We don’t know if our efforts to reduce the certain harm from climate disruption will affect the course of terrorism in our world. But we believe that when the delegates from all corners of the earth meet in Paris in two weeks, their resolve will be strengthened to protect their children’s children’s children from the danger they are charged with averting.

So, with hearts filled with empathy and determination, we turn to the work that we can do.

We can make a difference right here at home. Which of the following could you do more of?

  1. Pile on the sweaters and blankets and turn down the heat.
  2. Plug the cracks around the doors and put plastic sheeting over the windows.
  3. Buy less stuff and swap stuff more.
  4. Drive less, accelerate slower, and inflate the tires.
  5. Switch the Source Now in your home from the fossil fuels that the utility companies buy to clean, healthy electricity.

These are completely in our control. Let’s treat the energy we use as if we were taking it from the coming generations. Because that’s just what we’re doing as long as our energy comes from fossil fuels. Eversource and National Grid won’t switch from fossil fuels without a fight. Berkshire Gas and Kinder Morgan won’t stop lobbying for more pipelines. So let’s fight.
There’s several people in Boston who have been hearing a lot from the fossil fuel industry lately. They need to hear from you and your friends in their districts.  Look through your contact list, your facebook friends, your school reunion list.
