Senators, Don’t Fast-Track Fracked Gas

PLAN-NE logo

This Monday Action, for the week of 7/31/17, is brought to you by our friends at Pipeline Awareness Network for the Northeast. Contact Senators Markey and Warren and ask them to oppose the energy bill that would make exporting fracked gas easy. For the sake of the generations to come we have to stop building any new fossil fuel infrastructure.

Congress is trying to rush through a pipeline fast-track bill that expedites Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal approvals (creating “need” for more pipelines), requires increased deference to FERC from state, local and tribal governments, and much more. The House version – H.R. 2910 – just passed last week. The word is that the Senate bill could be voted on early this week, and that Bernie Sanders is so far the only Senator to have spoken out againstit!

Please make a quick call:

Capital switchboard: (202) 224-3121 – they will connect you to your Senators.

Basic message:  Please oppose S.1460 – it would fast-track LNG export and pipeline reviews, instead of giving them the additional scrutiny they need!  This energy bill moves us in the wrong direction in many ways.  The fossil fuel industry doesn’t need more handouts and FERC needs major reform, not more power to do the fossil fuel companies’ bidding.

Here is a fact sheet with more information about the bill; here is the full text.

While phone calls are best, here’s a quick link from Food & Water Watch with an editable form email that has the basics.

You are making the changes we need! Thank you for your effort. Please share this Monday Action with friends and family across the country.

See you next Monday.

Our Public Lands Belong to Our Children

ANWR

Here’s your Monday Action for the week of 6/12/17:

The White House and some members of Congress are working on legislation to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR, in Alaska) for oil drilling as well as other public lands that are currently protected.

ANWR is “the wildest place in America” and it makes no sense economically to develop the ANWR for oil. The Trump administration is examining a broad range of public lands for potential other uses.

This week’s Monday Action is to contact Senator Markey and ask him to oppose any legislation that is put forward to transfer national parks to state ownership, or to open up public lands to resource extraction.

Dear Senator Markey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I commend you for being bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.

The White House and some members of Congress, including Senator Murkowski from Alaska, are working on legislation to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling. President Trump is also looking into redefining other public lands, including 27 National Monuments.

With our children’s future hanging in the balance, we can’t risk such foolish actions. It is a fatal mistake to promote more fossil fuel use, and also to destroy natural environments that were protected for future generations and are the best and last areas of climate resiliency.

Please lead the opposition to any legislation that is put forward to transfer national parks or monuments to state ownership, or to open up public lands to any form of resource extraction.

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the children of Massachusetts, the country, and the world.

Sincerely,

Keep Science Policy Honest, Senator

Monday Action for week of 4/3/17.
Thank you to Grist, an independent, online climate news outlet, from which we lifted liberally for this week’s action:

A bill — just passed by the U.S. House — in theory advocates for more transparency, but in practice would serve mainly to gum up the works at the agency.

The HONEST Act — or the Honest and Open New EPA Science Treatment Act — would require (among other things) any data the EPA cites to be freely available online. The EPA already publishes much of its own data online, but the new bill means any data from studies published in scientific journals would have to be acquired by the agency at an estimated cost of $250 million. The bill allows for $1 million to cover these activities.

Call Senator Markey and let him know you have his back in opposing this affront to the EPA’s ability to use all climate data available in making recommendations for policy. You can use the text below as talking points or copy-and-paste. But personalizing your message makes it count a lot more.

Dear Senator Markey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I commend you for being bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.
The EPA’s scientific integrity is under attack.

I support your opposition to H.R. 1430, the HONEST Act. There is nothing honest about it. This bill attempts to undermine the EPA’s use of scientific research that climate solutions depend on.

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the children of Massachusetts, the country, and the world.

Senator Markey, We Can’t Wait

womens_march_in_boston_girl_saving_world

Monday Action for week of 1/30/17:

Do you hear the ROAR? That’s the full-throated growl of millions of Mother Bears saying “We will do anything to defend all that’s precious to us.” And we’re not going to wait for the next generation to grow up. It’s our responsibility and we need to solve it NOW.

Let’s focus that outrage on Scott Pruit, an outrageous nominee for the Environmental Protection Agency.

You can use the sample talking points or copy-and-paste the text below. But Senator Rosenberg suggested at Saturday’s climate forum (attended by 750 people!), that personalizing your message makes it count a lot more. Better yet, call if you can.

Dear Senator Markey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue which future generations depend on us to solve. I commend you for being bold in fighting climate change and promoting clean energy for the health and safety of all our children.

Thank you for introducing the resolution for 100% clean electricity by 2050. Yet, it seems that every week, new research finds that climate change is advancing more quickly than scientists had predicted. Any movement towards 100% renewables is welcome, but it’s become clear that we need to move much more quickly than we previously thought: 2050 is too late!

To avoid the worst scenario, we need to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035 as proposed in new legislation filed in Massachusetts.

The election of a president hostile to clean energy and pushing fossil fuels means that we are losing precious time to halt climate change. His choice of Pruitt to head the EPA is a move in the opposite direction. We, and the children we protect, no longer have time for missteps. I urge you to vote “no” on Pruitt’s nomination. Our children’s future depends on our leaders making the right choices NOW. Before they grow up.

Sincerely,

Promises

Today’s Monday Action: Call on U.S. Senators Warren and Markey to help lead the 100% renewable revolution so that our children’s lives may be filled with promise.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, reach for the phone or grab a postcard: Use the text below as is or adapt it, perhaps make it personal, by mentioning the ages of children you love. If you’re not in Massachusetts, you can write your own senators with the general pitch.
___________________________________________________
Dear Senators Markey and Warren,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This fight we cannot lose: Future generations depend on us to pull back from the brink. Ready or not, we are the emergency brake.

The American people were promised brighter futures and new jobs in this campaign season. We urgently need the green jobs necessary for a huge shift in energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels. The Stanford University Solutions Project has mapped out HERE what each state can do to get to 100% renewable energy. We urgently need your leadership to build just such new infrastructure for a livable future, together on this beautiful Earth.

We “need to accelerate our efforts to reduce carbon pollution and shift our energy economy to clean energy to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.” (Senator Markey, Oct. 4. 2016): The Solutions Project demonstrates how we can create good local jobs while we divest from fossil fuels. This is the new infrastructure we need, not Keystone, Dakota Access Pipeline or other proposed pipelines meant to drag filthy gas across our prairies, aquifers and back yards to sell to the highest international bidder from our coasts. For climate, natural gas is worse than coal when taking into account the methane leaked from extraction through combustion. It’s a “bridge” to nowhere.

Together, we can pull back from the brink. Thank you, as ever, for your leadership in these extraordinary times.

Sincerely,

Sen. Markey, Our Children Thank You

Today’s Monday Action: Thank Senator Ed Markey for asking Obama to stop the DAPL (just as we did in last week’s Monday Action).

_____________________________

Dear Senator Markey,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to source 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We are glad you agree that we need to fix gas leaks, not build more pipelines.

Thank you for your letter this week to President Obama asking him to halt construction of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. You know that here in MA we are moving ahead to replace fossil fuel sources with solar and wind because it can and must be done now.

We have a lot to be proud of in the Commonwealth as a leader in climate solutions. In the Pioneer Valley we just celebrated the groundbreaking of what will be a large solar project at the site of the former coal-fired power plant on Mount Tom in Holyoke. We are #1, tied with CA, for energy efficiency.

And we know we need to push harder for net-zero carbon emissions.

Thank you for putting your shoulder to that wheel with us. The children and I thank you.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and four other senators on Thursday asked President Barack Obama to stop the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, just days after more than two dozen protesters were arrested at a construction site in North Dakota. The senators — Sanders, I-Vt., Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., and Edward Markey, D-Mass. — called for further research into the pipeline’s “potential climate impacts”, citing data provided by Oil Change International, an advocacy organization.
