Senators, Don’t Fast-Track Fracked Gas

PLAN-NE logo

This Monday Action, for the week of 7/31/17, is brought to you by our friends at Pipeline Awareness Network for the Northeast. Contact Senators Markey and Warren and ask them to oppose the energy bill that would make exporting fracked gas easy. For the sake of the generations to come we have to stop building any new fossil fuel infrastructure.

Congress is trying to rush through a pipeline fast-track bill that expedites Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal approvals (creating “need” for more pipelines), requires increased deference to FERC from state, local and tribal governments, and much more. The House version – H.R. 2910 – just passed last week. The word is that the Senate bill could be voted on early this week, and that Bernie Sanders is so far the only Senator to have spoken out againstit!

Please make a quick call:

Capital switchboard: (202) 224-3121 – they will connect you to your Senators.

Basic message:  Please oppose S.1460 – it would fast-track LNG export and pipeline reviews, instead of giving them the additional scrutiny they need!  This energy bill moves us in the wrong direction in many ways.  The fossil fuel industry doesn’t need more handouts and FERC needs major reform, not more power to do the fossil fuel companies’ bidding.

Here is a fact sheet with more information about the bill; here is the full text.

While phone calls are best, here’s a quick link from Food & Water Watch with an editable form email that has the basics.

You are making the changes we need! Thank you for your effort. Please share this Monday Action with friends and family across the country.

See you next Monday.

Promises

Today’s Monday Action: Call on U.S. Senators Warren and Markey to help lead the 100% renewable revolution so that our children’s lives may be filled with promise.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, reach for the phone or grab a postcard: Use the text below as is or adapt it, perhaps make it personal, by mentioning the ages of children you love. If you’re not in Massachusetts, you can write your own senators with the general pitch.
___________________________________________________
Dear Senators Markey and Warren,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This fight we cannot lose: Future generations depend on us to pull back from the brink. Ready or not, we are the emergency brake.

The American people were promised brighter futures and new jobs in this campaign season. We urgently need the green jobs necessary for a huge shift in energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels. The Stanford University Solutions Project has mapped out HERE what each state can do to get to 100% renewable energy. We urgently need your leadership to build just such new infrastructure for a livable future, together on this beautiful Earth.

We “need to accelerate our efforts to reduce carbon pollution and shift our energy economy to clean energy to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.” (Senator Markey, Oct. 4. 2016): The Solutions Project demonstrates how we can create good local jobs while we divest from fossil fuels. This is the new infrastructure we need, not Keystone, Dakota Access Pipeline or other proposed pipelines meant to drag filthy gas across our prairies, aquifers and back yards to sell to the highest international bidder from our coasts. For climate, natural gas is worse than coal when taking into account the methane leaked from extraction through combustion. It’s a “bridge” to nowhere.

Together, we can pull back from the brink. Thank you, as ever, for your leadership in these extraordinary times.

Sincerely,

Monday Action 11/7/16: Remember the Paris Climate Accord a year ago, when the world decided to finally act on climate change? We have good news:
The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we’d dreamed. We are encouraged that our voices are being heard. Today we are back to stop the new pipelines in our own nation, a struggle peacefully led in North Dakota by America’s original Nations:

Today’s Monday Action: Ask Elizabeth Warren (or your Senator) to Shine a Light on injustice at Standing Rock.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Maybe make it personal, mention ages of children dear to you.
___________________________________________________

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground- including natural gas.

The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we had hoped. The USA must do its part to Keep It in the Ground:

Together we will peacefully stop new pipelines: We need you to speak out for the injustices being meted out against the brave protesters at Standing Rock by fossil fuel giants. We need you to sing out that the People’s watchdog, FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, was founded to protect the People, not to fast track new pipelines, as FERC did again 10/28/16 (to pass by the Indian Point nuclear power plant in NY).

Yet FERC is literally in bed with Fossil Fuel companies (see husband and wife team) while pipeline interests set dogs on peaceful protesters and their children. This must stop– please get out your impressive megaphone for a call to action.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Senator, FERC Hurts Us

2015-07-29 Greenfield FERC Do Your Job

Monday Action for week of 10/3/16: Direct your Senators to reform the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or FERC. FERC oversees gas pipelines that cross state lines. Their mission should be to protect us from climate change not accelerate it by approving nearly every pipeline that’s proposed.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Use the text below as is or adapt it, maybe make it personal, by mentioning the ages of children you love. If you’re not in Massachusetts, you can write your own senators with the general pitch above.

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. We can’t lose this fight: Future generations depend on us to pull ourselves back from the brink. Together, we can. But we urgently need to source 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We need to be ramping down our use of fossil fuels, not building more pipelines and we need a real price on carbon ASAP.

Senator Warren, we watched with gratitude and awe as you demanded straightforward answers from Mr. Stumpf of Wells Fargo, never allowing him to evade your questions.

The fossil fuel industry has been stealing from citizens for decades with the help of FERC. We’ve had private property taken by eminent domain, our water poisoned by fracking, and our children’s and grandchildren’s future compromised by climate change. FERC continues to approve pipelines that don’t have all their permits, that plow through sensitive environments in conservation areas, and that are headed to export terminals. The Administration’s directive that all federal agencies have to consider the impact of their decisions on climate change applies to FERC too.

It’s past time to reform FERC! We’re asking you to bring the same tenacity to questioning FERC’s mission as you did to the banking industry. Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champion. The children and I thank you.

Dear Senators Markey and Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to source 100% of our energy from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind. We need to fix gas leaks, not build more pipelines and we need a carbon tax ASAP.

Thank you for continuing to seek more detailed information on how FERC chose NRG to do the environmental review of the Atlantic Bridge pipeline. With the AIM pipeline passing by a nuclear power plant and the Atlantic Bridge passing a working quarry, too much is at stake to rely on a potentially tainted analysis for approval of the pipeline.

Therefore, I urge you to demand that FERC issue a Stop Work Order until outstanding questions about NRG’s conflicts of interest are resolved, and another, genuinely independent EIS, or analysis, has been completed.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Dear Senators Warren and Markey,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. Therefore I oppose all new fossil fuel infrastructure and want a fair price on carbon. We have to be bold and act fast.

Thank you for calling on the nation’s top energy regulator to redo its environmental review of a proposed natural gas pipeline project after reports of possible conflicts of interest surfaced:

I was pleased to learn of your letter to Norman Bay, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, noting that a third-party contractor FERC hired to vet Spectra Energy’s Atlantic Bridge project had already been working for the developer on a separate project.

Thank you for your vigilance in pointing to a post in the green website “DeSmog Blog,” which claimed a third-party contractor, Natural Resources Group, was hired to vet the Atlantic Bridge project. According to the blog, NRG was also contracting on the PennEast project — which Spectra partially owns — that would stretch from northeastern Pennsylvania into New Jersey.

I am delighted by your call on FERC to redo the environmental assessment it released earlier this year on the Atlantic Bridge gas project. FERC found the pipeline expansion proposal would have no “significant impact” on the environment.

You both rightly said that the relationship appears to constitute a conflict of interest according to FERC’s standards. Commission rules bar contractors from having an ongoing relationship with applicants or financial or other interests in the outcome of a commission decision.

Thank you, keep up the good work!

*Warren and Markey noted that a third-party contractor FERC hired to vet Spectra Energy’s Atlantic Bridge project had already been working for the developer on a separate project, and wrote: “To ensure the thoroughness and objectivity of the environmental review process and to restore public confidence in that process, I urge you to issue an environmental impact statement on the Atlantic Bridge project using only third-party contractors without ties to the natural gas industry,… Even if NRG managed to technically avoid a conflict of interest, the company’s myriad ties to the natural gas industry make it difficult to believe that it could objectively evaluate the environmental impact of the Atlantic Bridge project”.
