200 Nations, Together

paris-one-climate-one-worldwomen-at-standing-rock-small

Monday Action 11/7/16: Remember the Paris Climate Accord a year ago, when the world decided to finally act on climate change? We have good news:
The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we’d dreamed. We are encouraged that our voices are being heard. Today we are back to stop the new pipelines in our own nation, a struggle peacefully led in North Dakota by America’s original Nations:

Today’s Monday Action: Ask Elizabeth Warren (or your Senator) to Shine a Light on injustice at Standing Rock.

Please note: Calls and letters count more. So today, grab a postcard or reach for the phone: Maybe make it personal, mention ages of children dear to you.
___________________________________________________

Dear Senator Warren,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the gravest threat facing us all and future generations depend on us to halt it. We need to get 100% of our energy from clean sources like solar and wind. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground- including natural gas.

The Paris Climate Accord is taking effect faster than we had hoped. The USA must do its part to Keep It in the Ground:

Together we will peacefully stop new pipelines: We need you to speak out for the injustices being meted out against the brave protesters at Standing Rock by fossil fuel giants. We need you to sing out that the People’s watchdog, FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, was founded to protect the People, not to fast track new pipelines, as FERC did again 10/28/16 (to pass by the Indian Point nuclear power plant in NY).

Yet FERC is literally in bed with Fossil Fuel companies (see husband and wife team) while pipeline interests set dogs on peaceful protesters and their children. This must stop– please get out your impressive megaphone for a call to action.

Thank you for bringing your considerable influence to be our climate champions. The children and I thank you.

Sincerely,

Warning: Extra Potent Monday Action!

The Paris U.N. Climate Talks have concluded, and the news is better than many of us expected: The world acknowledged that it’s us or fossil fuels. Now we need binding laws, FAST.

So it’s up to the People- it’s up to you: As leading climate scientist, Jim Hansen says: “[T]he only way we’ll keep it [fossil fuel] in the ground is with a rising fee on carbon so that we get other energies to replace the fossil fuels… [W]e need grassroots support.”

WARNING Usually you contact one person a week. This Monday Action is seven times bigger than usual– so take a deep breath, and give it a little extra time or pick one representative (or do one a day this week…!)

Today’s Action offers you the chance to tell all SEVEN of the elected representatives we check in with regularly to put a true price on carbon, a carbon fee and dividend.

Dear President Obama/Senator/Congressman/Governor/State Senator/State Representative,

I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore we need you to do all you can to get us a carbon fee and dividend. NOW.

I vote for a livable future, and that future must be carbon-neutral.
Sincerely,

Senator Warren: Call to Rally After Paris

The UN Climate Talks in Paris are in progress. We know that the agreement won’t solve climate disruption tomorrow. We are watching for strong commitments and goals that can be adjusted and accelerated in the next few years.

Global actions are planned for this Saturday, December 12th, the day after the Paris talks are scheduled to end. We will join a major rally, from 1-3pm on Boston Common, with a broad coalition of organizations for climate justice. Mothers Out Front members from all over will come together at the rally.

Right after the rally, 3:30-5:30pm, creative direct actions will take place in nearby locations in Boston. Western MA activists, including MOF members, are taking the lead in planning actions through Climate Action Now. See below for more information.

Today’s Monday Action: Take 5-minutes now to ask Senator Warren to call for increasing pressure to exceed goals after Paris.

Mothers Out Front Says Paris Here We Come!

Homestretch! Just one week left to go to Paris Climate Talks. Some of you have been here for almost 40 weeks: Great work, whether it was one Action or the whole enchilada. Next week we’ll introduce the volunteer team that has been bringing you Monday Actions.

Last week, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy’s report came out, proving conclusively there is no need for new gas pipelines. Today’s Monday Action is a huge thank you to the Attorney General for her courage to shine a light on how unwelcome this costly fossil fuel-driven proposed pipeline is:

Thank you for protecting rate-payers from predatory energy practices pushed by the fossil fuel lobby. While countries gather at the U.N. Climate talks in Paris to agree on global solutions to climate change, I am heartened that you are here with us concerned citizens, on the ground in MA, making sure that we do our part to fight global warming and the injustices that it brings, with all that we have.

Gather Locally for Paris
There are actions all over the world next weekend. Find the event nearest you to be part of the Global Climate March. Since the attacks in Paris made it impossible for the large marches there to take place, it’s more important than ever for us to march for those in Paris.
In Western Mass there are actions in Springfield, Amherst and Northampton on the eve of the Climate Summit in Paris.

Northampton 5:30 Step off from the high school, march to City Hall for rally 6-7pm. RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/131746587186234/

Springfield 5-6pm Eastfield Mall. RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/465109347006043/

In Northampton, bring a 2 sentence statement to the negotiators in Paris about what you want to save and what you want to create and expand in the face of catastrophic climate change.

In Amherst, bring a 3 sentence “Letter to the Future” by completing the following three prompts. You can share it aloud at the rally if you want and then send it to our leaders in Paris.

For children:
1) The world I want will be…
2) My family is making that world by…
3) I ask the world’s leaders in Paris to…
Adults: imagine writing to a child of the future descended from your family
1) The world I want for you will be…
2) I’m making that world for you by…

Your State Rep Needs to Hear About Your Climate Concerns

Just 3 more weeks in our 40-week countdown to the UN Climate Summit in Paris. And big things are heating up: the President rejected the Keystone XL pipeline and China is burning 17% more coal than we thought. We have to go for broke: What would it take to wean us from fossil fuels this decade?

Today’s Monday Action:
Urge Your Massachusetts House Representative to be bolder than ever before.

This week the Pacific Ocean was 9 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, what the NYT called a “cauldron”. It’s time to pull the emergency brake: We need very bold action. What are you doing to wean us from fossil fuels this decade? I would like to see that plan.

The Fate of Solar Growth Now Lies in the House

Just 10 more weeks in our 40-week countdown to the UN Climate Summit in Paris. Our 30 actions to date have made a difference!

Today’s Monday Action:
Urge Your Massachusetts House Representative to Be Bold in Keeping the Solar Industry Growing.

Find your personal State Legislators here.  (If your representative is Ellen Story, copy and paste this sample letter; if not see suggestions below)
…………………………….

Dear Representative Story,
I am urgently concerned about climate change. This is the defining issue on which future generations will judge us. Therefore I urge you to be bold in fighting for real solutions to stop climate change. We look to you for your leadership.

Thanks to Senator Ben Downing, the Senate has adopted an amendment that would raise the cap on net metering in the Commonwealth that aligns with our 1600 MW goal of installed solar capacity.

The amendment also directs the Department of Energy and Resources to create a new solar incentive program post 1600MW. This amendment creates long-term guidelines for increasing solar capacity while also promoting continued development prior to the expiration of the Federal Solar Tax credit on December 31, 2016. As you know, we need the House to pass this legislation now.

While we’re growing our renewable infrastructure, we need to reduce our energy consumption to avoid new fossil fuel infrastructure in Mass. Vermont is employing Demand Management as a strategy to reduce demand; could we do this in MA? There are many ways we could reduce energy consumption, level the peak demand, and change the calculations of how much gas we’ll need in the near future. Many of us would be happy to turn down non-system critical equipment to save money and avoid the proposed dirty, disastrous pipelines threatening our aquifers, protected lands and bringing UN-natural toxic gas from Pennsylvania to be sold at our coast to the highest bidders.

Now we urge you, our esteemed State Representative, to please continue pushing for the net metering legislation and to raise the possibilities of reducing energy demand.

Sincerely,
